Listen to the account of a tale that leaves me

لي وعدٌ على غزالٍ غريرٍ

ينجز الوعد كل غرةِ شهر

I have a promise from a guileless gazelle,

I have a promise on a charming gazelle

who fulfills the promise at the start of every month.

To fulfill the promise every new moon

ومغن يحيط بالحال علماً

ومغن يحيط بالحال علماً

فهو يأتي ولا يقول بحذر

فهو يأتي ولا يقول بحذر

And a singer has full knowledge of the situation;

While a singer knows my state well

so he comes and does not speak cautiously.

He comes but doesn't warn discreetly

وعليك انتهاء سكرهما اليو

وعليك انتهاء سكرهما اليو

م إلى غاية المراد وسكري

م إلى غاية المراد وسكري

And you must see that their drunkenness today

And you must end their intoxication today

reaches the desired height—and mine as well.

To the intended goal and my intoxication

فأرحني من الهموم براحٍ

فأرحني من الهموم براحٍ

So relieve me of cares with wine

So relieve me of worries with comfort

that drives sorrow from the watering places of my breast.

That drives away worry from my heart's resources

وابق حياً يضاف قسطٌ إلى عم

And live on: may a share be added to your life

And live on, adding a portion to your

throughout life, from every lifespan.
