امش إليها مشية الليث أو

فاحمل عليها حملة البر

فاحمل عليها حملة البر

Go at them with a lion’s stride, or

charge upon them in an onslaught of “righteousness.”

Keep watch over the sikbāj: whoever smells it,

or merely passes beside the cooking pot,

or passed by the cooking pot on his way,

فاقبض على لحيته واحترز

من حيلةٍ في أمرها تجري

من حيلةٍ في أمرها تجري

seize him by the beard, and beware

seize his beard, and guard yourself

of any scheme concerning it that may be afoot.

against any trick carried out in their affairs.

أريد أن تحصي طاقاتها

ولك ما فيها من الشعر

I want you to tally every one of their batches,

I want you to count their bundles,

and all the wool upon them is yours.

and whatever hair they contain is yours.

اعمل بها لي عمراً جامعاً

اعمل بها لي عمراً جامعاً

مستظهراً فيه كما تدري

مستظهراً فيه كما تدري

Use them to secure me a whole lifetime’s livelihood,

Work with them for me for a lifetime, gathering,

laying by reserves in it, as you know how.

واحذر إذا وفيتها في غدٍ

But beware, when you render them in full tomorrow,

Among the people I charge you with this

وكيف لا أوصي بهذا وقد

بليت منهم ببني البظر

How could I not charge you thus, when

And how could I not enjoin this, when

among them I have been afflicted by the Sons of the Clitoris?

واضطرني جور زماني إلى

معيشة تزري على الحر

The injustice of my age has forced me

And the tyranny of my times has driven me to
