And this poem is like a bride,
And this poem is like a bride,
Adorned with lovely meanings,
Adorned with lovely meanings,

Without a whiff of some passerby's fart,
Without a whiff of incidental flatulence,
Nor a mustard seed's weight of excrement.
Nor a mustard seed’s weight of excrement.

لكانت تحلُّ عقود النكاح

وفي الصيف كافور خرطٍ رياحي
I sent it forth as ambergris in winter,
I sent it as ambergris in winter,
And in summer as camphor from a windy purge.
And in summer, shavings of Riyahi camphor.

ولا حنكت بلعوق الفقاح
Yet it has wiped no eunuch's arse,
So I have not wiped the testicles’ khafshalanj,
Nor rubbed the gullets of milch she-camels.
Nor rubbed a palate with an electuary of anuses.
وشعريand my poetry لاno بدescape منfrom سخفهits vulgarity
وشعري لا بد من سخفه
ولاand no بدescape للدارfor the house منfrom مستراحa privy
ولا بد للدار من مستراح
My verse cannot but have its vulgarity—
And my poetry must have its vulgarity,
As a house cannot but have a privy.
And a house must have a privy.
