O master of humankind, may you live amid blessings

to which the kingdoms of the non-Arabs turn for refuge.

My wit in debate, ever ready,

is more conspicuous in both armies than a banner.

And the handwriting is mine, as you see it—not

Venus between the paper and the pen.

    فكيف لو ذقت ثردة الدسم

    All this, while my bread is bare, without broth;

what, then, if I tasted a helping of bread steeped in fat?

What have I to do with meat? Indeed, craving for it

has left me meat upon a butcher's board.

And what has my throat to do with bread that wounds it

with salt? The morsels complain of its roughness.
