وأبرصٍ من بني الزواني

وأبرصٍ من بني الزواني

ملمعٍ أبلق اليدين

ملمعٍ أبلق اليدين

And a leper from among the sons of harlots—

With brightest hands and the most brilliant eyes

mottled, with piebald hands—

Of the Zuwani's youthful progeny

قلت وقد لج بي أذاه

قلت وقد لج بي أذاه

وزاد ما بينه وبيني

وزاد ما بينه وبيني

I said, as his harassment of me persisted

I said, as his violence overwhelmed me,

and matters between him and me worsened:

And increased what was between us

يا معشر الشيعة الحقوني

يا معشر الشيعة الحقوني

قد ظفر الشمر بالحسين

قد ظفر الشمر بالحسين

“O community of the Shi'a, come to my rescue!

O community of Shi'ites, help me!

Shimr has indeed prevailed over Husayn!”

Al-Shimr has triumphed over Al-Husayn
