قامَ فلمَّا دَنَوْتُ منها

قامَ فلمَّا دَنَوْتُ منها

نامَ وما مثلُ ذاكَ خجلهْ

نامَ وما مثلُ ذاكَ خجلهْ

It rose, but when I drew near her,

He stood up but when I approached her

It fell asleep—and no shame compares with that.

She slept though that wasn't like her shyness

وكلَّ كفِّي لفرطِ جَذْبِي

وكلَّ كفِّي لفرطِ جَذْبِي

لهُ وما للجبانِ حملهْ

لهُ وما للجبانِ حملهْ

And my palm grew weary from all my tugging

And both my palms out of my intense pulling

At it—and a coward cannot charge.

Of him though the coward has no endurance

وأصبعي لا تزالُ جنباً

وأصبعي لا تزالُ جنباً

لهُ ولا همَّة لسِفْلهْ

لهُ ولا همَّة لسِفْلهْ

And my finger still remains beside

And my finger kept hovering over

It—and the base fellow has no spirit.

Him though the base has no ambition

فزَحْزَحَتْ وانْثَنَتْ وقالتْ

فزَحْزَحَتْ وانْثَنَتْ وقالتْ

قومُوا انظرُوا عاشِقاً بوصلهْ

قومُوا انظرُوا عاشِقاً بوصلهْ

So she shifted away, turned, and said,

So she wiggled away and bent over and said

"Rise! Look at a lover at a tryst!"

Get up look a lover in his union

فقلتُ هذا لفرطِ حُبِّي

فقلتُ هذا لفرطِ حُبِّي

قالتْ دع الترَّهاتِ باللهْ

قالتْ دع الترَّهاتِ باللهْ

So I said, "This is from my overwhelming love."

So I said this is out of my intense love

She said, "Drop the nonsense, for God's sake!"

She said leave this nonsense for God's sake

قلتُ أُقيمُ الدليلَ قالتْ

قلتُ أُقيمُ الدليلَ قالتْ

لو قامَ ما احتجتَ للأَدلَّهْ

لو قامَ ما احتجتَ للأَدلَّهْ

I said, "I'll establish the proof." She said,

I said I'll provide the proof she said

"Had it risen, you would not have needed proofs."

If it could stand you wouldn't need proof
