A longing that had departed revisited the lovesick man,

and prolonged separation increased the flame within his heart.

Lovesick, his hopes are near despite the distance, whenever

he remembers those who forsook him—the absent neighbors.

His days and nights are divided

between encountering sleeplessness in them and witnessing strife.

He inhales the wind from their direction; and whenever

a north wind blows, his passion seethes and he yearns.

The reproacher said, “Be patient and forgo loving them,”

yet love, like the heart, has throbbed since the parting.

    واِسأل رحيلي عَنهم تعرف السببا

    Between the heart and patience lies a barrier;

ask my departure from them, and you will know the reason.

I cast my patience aside when I departed, and indeed

I met with hardship on my journey after leaving them.

Will there return—while hopes remain a mere incidental attribute—

to the heart what has departed of the substance of joy?

O you perfect in beauty, my sorrow is abundant, and I see

my longing prolonged, and my patience away from you curtailed.

May God not banish the days that, close to you, had

arrived—but they passed away; oh, how strange!

Days when the heart’s beloved drew near

to me, and drove away whoever had been watching.

And I spent the night seeing my cup, with the wine within it,

as a burnished gaze whenever it lunged or struck.

Until God decreed departure from him; and now

the beloved has become hidden from sight.

I was given a darkened moon for the full moon, and displeasure for contentment,

and estrangement for union, and imitation pearls for pearls.

I have called witnesses to what was wrought

upon me by the hands of separation, if you deny the calamities:

sorrow, then anxiety, then rose-red tears, then the

sleepless eye, then ailments, then weariness.

    وَاِسودَّ طرفُ اِصطِباري بعدكم وَكبا

    And my eye grew white, and its tear ducts reddened;

and the steed of my endurance turned black after you left, and stumbled.

    ما كلّ وَقت يَنال المرء ما طلبا

    I sought you, and nearness became distance for me;

one does not always attain what one has sought.
