منْfrom بعْدِafter طولِlength تأمُّلٍreflection وتلوّمِand lingering
Whose are the riding-camels hurtling toward Rama,
To whom are the ships sailing towards Ramah
after long reflection and lingering?
After long contemplation and hesitation

Curved like bows, lean-bodied,
Bent like palm trunks, determined spears
whenever they dart forth, they strike the intended mark.
No matter how high they aim, they hit the target

They carry a family from among the people of ardent love,
Bearing the youth of chivalry, bound
enamored of a dwelling and landmark of passion.
To the passion of love and its symbol

Each wakeful-hearted one, whose speech
The talk of every heart's vigil stirs
keeps sleep from slumbering eyes;
Sleep from the drowsy eyes

Smitten by the scattered beauty
beguiled by scattered beauties, enthralled;
Infatuated by the charms of the beloved

resting his head atop the mounts in the protected grounds,
Pillowing over the riding-beasts in yearning
imploring in its dwelling, searching for signs;
Imploring in chant in the dwellings

pondering its remoteness, aching,
Contemplating the distance in agony
and yielding to his passion, utterly surrendered.
And resigned to passion in submission

They are bows, not riding-camels, as she shot
They are the sighs of ardour, not sins, for when
arrows from them toward the distant target.
They shot arrows at the precious aim

And the covenants of intimacy in which
have undone every firmly tied knot of patience.
Patience was annulled in every knot

لاnot تنْتَهيshe desists ولأهْلِand to the people of عُذْرةَ'Udhra تنْتَميshe belongs
What ails her that, when guided toward forgetting,
Why, when guided to its smooth course
she will not desist, and belongs to the people of 'Udhra?
Do they not cease, belonging to the excused?
تُزْجيshe sends forth عُهودَpledges الدّمْعِof tears منfrom أجْفانِهاher eyelids

She sends forth pledges of tears from her eyelids,
They awaken the tears' pacts from their lids
yearning at the memory of her bygone bond.
Passionately, by the memory of days gone by
لمْnot تُنْكِرِshe failed to recognize الحيَّthe tribe الحِلالَencamped وإنّماbut rather

She did not fail to recognize the encamped tribe; rather,
They did not deny the passion its lawfulness, but
through her consuming love she knew it, after uncertainty.
By their madness, they realized it after illusion
وعقيلةُand the noble lady of الحَيَّيْنِthe two tribes تُوقِفُhalts ركْبَهاher caravan
فالقوْمُso the people بينَbetween تأمُّلٍreflection وتألّمِand pain
And the noble lady of the two tribes halts her caravan,
The witness of the two encampments halts their journey
so the people are between reflection and pain.
While the people waver between thought and pain
مالُواthey leaned علىupon الأقْتابِthe camel-saddles حينwhen تأمّلواthey reflected
فالرّكبُso the riders بينbetween توسّدٍresting their heads وتوسّمِand reading signs
They leaned upon the camel-saddles when they reflected,
They turned to the planets when they reflected
so the riders are between resting their heads and searching for signs.
So the journey is between pillowing and imagining
أتْبَعْتُهاI sent after her نظَريmy gaze غَداةَthe morning of تمنّعَتْshe held aloof
فالطّرْفُso the gaze بينَbetween تمنّعٍholding aloof وتنعُّمِand delight
I followed her with my gaze the morning she held aloof,
I followed her with my gaze when she was coy
so my gaze is between restraint and delight.
So the glance is between refusal and delight
يُذْكيit kindles بمُحْمَرِّwith the crimson of الدموعِtears صَبابَتيmy yearning
فالقَلبُso the heart بينَbetween تضرُّجٍbeing stained crimson وتضرُّمِand blazing
With reddened tears it kindles my longing,
It kindles the red of tears on my youth
so the heart is between crimson staining and blazing.
Thus the heart is between streaming and chanting
كمhow many وقْفَةٍa halt حتَمتْdecreed عليهِupon it بالهَوىlove
فالوجْدُso yearning بيْنَbetween تحتّمٍinevitability وتحكُّمِand domination
How many a halt has sentenced it to love,
How many halts has passion compelled upon it
so yearning lies between inevitability and domination.
Thus fervour is between obligation and control
والشّمْسُand the sun تبْدوappears فيin السّحابِthe clouds وتخْتَفيand hides
فالأفْقُso the horizon بينَbetween تغيُّبٍvanishing وتغيُّمِand clouding over
And the sun appears among the clouds and disappears,
The sun appears in the clouds and disappears
so the horizon is between concealment and clouding.
Thus the horizon is between setting and glooming
والطّيرُand the birds تشْدوsing والحدائِقُand the gardens تنثَنيsway
فالدّوحُso the great trees بينَbetween ترنُّحٍswaying وترنّمِand singing
And the birds sing, and the gardens sway,
The birds sing and the gardens sway
so the great trees are between swaying and singing.
Thus the orchard is between humming and chanting
والغيثُand the rain يسحَبُtrails ذيلَهُits skirt فوقَover الرُبىthe hills
فالسّحْبُso the clouds بينbetween تجمّعٍgathering وتجهّمِand frowning
And the rain trails its skirt over the hills,
The rain drags its tail over the hills
so the clouds are between gathering and frowning.
Thus the clouds are between gathering and frowning
والزَّهْرُand the flowers قدalready شقّtore open النسيمُthe breeze جُيوبَهُtheir bosoms
فالرّوضُso the garden بينbetween تبسّمٍsmiling وتنَسُّمِand breathing the breeze
And the breeze has torn open the flowers' bosoms,
The flowers bloom as the breeze rends their dresses
so the garden is between smiling and breathing the breeze.
Thus the meadow is between smiling and breathing
كثَناءِlike praise of يوسُفٍYusuf الذيwho شرعَordained النّدىgenerosity
فالجودُso generosity بيْنَbetween مؤمَّلٍhoped-for وميمَّمِand sought-out
Like praise of Yusuf, who ordained generosity,
Like the bending of Joseph who paved the dew
so bounty is both hoped for and sought out.
Thus generosity is between hope and purpose
ملِكٌa king إذاwhen تُلِيتْare recited مآثِرُthe great deeds of مُلكِهhis reign
فالدُّرُّso the pearls بيْنَbetween منضَّدٍarrayed ومنظَّمِand strung
A king—when the great deeds of his reign are recited,
A king, when the exploits of his reign are recited
the pearls are now arrayed, now strung.
Thus the pearl is between threading and arranging
يُسْتَفتَحُis opened الناديthe assembly بذِكْرِby mention of خِلالِهhis virtues
فالوصْفُso the praise بينَbetween مقدّسٍhallowed ومُقدَّمِand given precedence
The assembly opens with mention of his virtues,
The assembly is inaugurated by the mention of his virtues
so his praise is hallowed and given precedence.
Thus the description is between sanctity and precedence

How many a wise judgment has called to the swords of his jihad:
How many wisdoms have called out his swords of jihad
These foes have spent their strength; take command!
These enemies have exhausted, so arbitrate!

How many a lofty resolve rises toward the stars
How many ambitions towards the stars ascend
on the day of spear-fighting, and hurls itself at the battle ranks,
On the day of spears as the processions aspire

with fearsome mettle that reaches the swift steeds,
With the awe of magnificent west to the leading
and a stirrer of war that belongs to the lightning-flashes,
And the stirring of war belonging to the brilliant

whether a driver guiding the foes to death,
Of a driver who guides the enemies to demise
or a racing steed, unmatched in markings, finely formed.
Or outstanding, refined and intrepid

So when the swords' lightning-flashes shine forth
So when gleams shine on the swords in fright
amid terror, they dispel every dark calamity.
They reveal every dark matter in the fray
وإذاand when تجلّتْshine forth للأسنّةِof the spearheads أنجُمٌstars

And when stars shine from the spearheads
And when stars shine on the tongues in the skirmish
amid the battle-dust, they reveal every obscure meaning.
They show every ambiguous meaning in the battle

And war, when his banners are raised for it,
And if war is waged and its banners unfurled
undoes every firmly bound covenant of unbelief.
Against blasphemy, it dissolves every covenant

He rules by a command authoritative among kings,
He ordains with unchallengeable royal command
and advances with resolve, decisive as a keen sword.
He goes forth with resolve like swords decisive

The deep seas of ample mail were never shaded in battle
The billows of the towering waves were not shadowed in the fray
except by groves of shattered spears.
Except by the poles of the broken lances

The bright sword-edges were never drawn in the clash
The ostrich eggs were not stripped in the battlefield
save to be clothed in the crimson of blood.
Except when clad in red blood

O helper of kings, with the resolve that
O saviour of kingdoms with resolve that
showed the way to those bound for Najd and Tihama!
Showed the way to the saviour and the bold

These foes hope for the bounty of your hand, which
These enemies seek the blessing of your hand that
is the thirsty one's watering-place and the destitute one's treasure.
Is the refuge of the shelterless and treasure of the destitute

They did not incline to peace until after
They inclined to peace only after
the world offered you the hand of surrender.
The world surrendered to you fully submitted

How many a nation sought you after its defiance,
How many nations after their defiance
to gain your pardon as a gift upon arrival!
Sought your pardon, a gift for those arriving

So you granted it, from your forbearance, the blessings
You granted them from your forbearance, bounties that
won by the hand of the guilty wrongdoer.
The hands of the evildoer and criminal obtained
أمَّنْتَهاyou made it safe فالقوْمُso the people بينَbetween مُهوّنٍone who makes light

You made it secure: some of its people make light
You gave them security, while the people waver between
of misfortune in comfort, while others doze.
Demoralized by fate and anxious

You bestowed on it, from your bounty, the favors that
You bestowed upon them from your generosity, bounties that
were immense; may it never lack its benefactor's presence!
Abundant, never depleted your munificence

All this—and, O God, that journey of yours which
This, by God, is your purpose that
raised the noblest landmark for the faith of God.
Exalted the most noble symbol of the religion of God

You made riding-camels ply it, obedient to auspicious stars,
You launched the ships by the aid of good fortune
traveling by night and moving as the stars move.
Moving, traversing like the stars
وحلَلْتَand you alighted فوقَabove البحْرِthe sea أمْنَعَthe most impregnable مَعْقِلٍstronghold

حيثُwhere الكواكبُthe stars ترْتَقيrise أوor ترْتَميshoot downward
And you alighted above the sea at the most impregnable stronghold,
And anchored atop the sea the mightiest stronghold
where the stars rise or shoot downward.
Where the planets rise and fall
قدindeed قابَلَit faced الكفَّthe Hand الخَضيبَthe Dyed كأنّهas though it

It faced the Dyed Hand, as though it
As if it forever gestures to it with a blood-stained palm
were forever signaling to it with a greeter's palm.
Like one fully submitted

يُلْفَىis found الأمانُsafety لمنجِدٍfor one bound for Najd أوor مُتْهِمِone bound for Tihama
And you stayed in the palace, upon whose heights
And you established the palace in which by its generosity
safety is found for one bound for Najd or Tihama.
Safety is found by the saviour or the bold
فتَرىso you see الثّنيّةَthe mountain pass دونَbelow مظْهَرِthe appearance of أفْقِهِits horizon

So you see the mountain pass beneath its visible horizon,
You see the creek below the horizon
meeting the winds of the air with mouth agape.
Meeting the winds with gaping mouth

Then you moved to the bank of the river,
Then you moved to the bank of the valley which
from which a benefactor's palm replenishes the sea.
The sea is fed by its comfort
طارَدتَyou pursued فيهاin it كُلَّevery أطْلَسَdusky wolf شارِدٍfleeing

There you pursued every dusky, fleeing wolf,
You pursued therein every straying vagabond
fearful, yet advancing toward death.
Fleeing towards death advancing

the description of whose radiant virtues is no secret.
No description of its beauty is concealed

You reached it; rejoice in the most fortunate destination!
You reached it, so congratulations on the happiest destination
And you came to it; rejoice in the most fortunate arrival!
You arrived in it, so greetings on the happiest arrival

So here it is for you: obedient to eloquence, it preferred
To you thus by eloquence they chose
the imperative of hastening to you, without delay.
The rule of poetry without hesitation

They came to you from the choicest words as pearls
