These are the abodes: no sooner do their outskirts appear
It is the abode, so its valleys do not appear
than every lovesick wanderer finds his way in their valley.
Except every wanderer was guided by its valleys

Haunts whose earth is hallowed, for they have guaranteed
A pledged land, sanctified, it guaranteed
bounty to their seekers, a draught to their thirsty.
Provision for its seekers, and flowers for its companions

وإنْ عدَتْنا عنِ اللُّقْيا عَوادِيها
How often their watering places have called us to drink,
How much its springs called us to watering
though their adversities kept us from reunion.
And if we turned away from encountering it, its plateaus

They sent, in the folds of their east wind, from our longing,
Its early youth gave from our youthfulness
a trust—would that I knew whether it would be fulfilled!
A trust, I wish I knew, will it fulfill it?

How many hearts were tossed about upon their valley floors,
How many hearts it turned in its resting places
and how often they lamented separation in their gathering places.
And how much it complained of its meadows in its valleys

So longing grew fierce within them—if only it could rescue them!
Passion was fervent with it, if it could help it
And they sought refuge in patience—if only it could help them!
And patience sought refuge in it, if it could avail it

ترْتاحُ شوْقاً وبالأرْواحِ نَفْديها
Thus it is; and we turn toward a maiden who has arrived,
This while we went on pilgrimage to a chaste woman
thrilling with longing, and with our souls we ransom her.
To find peace, and we ransom it with our souls

A noble maiden whose beauty shone forth and polished
A woman whose beauty manifested and shone
the mirror of my thought, so time cannot tarnish it.
The mirror of my thoughts, time cannot resist it

She walks proudly in embroidered mantles; many a time
She walks proudly like a doe
her embroidery would have betrayed her, but for her graceful sway.
Her gait adorned it, if not for her pace

I called to her, 'Be generous!'—and freely bestowed
I called her my generosity, and cheap
among us is her bounty, even as her assembly is exalted.
Among us was her call, as her caller was dear

ما بالُ هاتيكَ ممْطولٌ مُناديها
The one called upon is the one kept waiting—how strange!
Indeed the caller is outstretched, how strange!
What ails that maiden, that her caller is kept waiting?
Why does the one called outstretch the one calling?

God be praised for a guide to the straight path, who guided
To God a guide, to the aim of the path guided
the thoughts of my mind with the gifts he offers them from her.
The thoughts of my thinking, what guides it guides it

Our souls made its love a treasure
to comfort them on the day their mutual calling reveals them.
To comfort it the day its longing calls it

Noble in lineage, she came among later generations,
Noble in origin among others she came
and her beginnings attained the utmost heights.
And attained the utmost heights in her goals

She spurned for long, but when she consented
her approach was now toward a welcome meeting.
Her meeting became the desired aim of the encounter

The Prophet's scion favored me, from his noble maidens,
A descendant of the Prophet betrothed me from his clan
with a daughter of thought whose singer delights the ear.
With a daughter of intellect, pleasing to the hearing

ما ضلّتِ الخَلْقُ قَصْداً وهْو هاديها
Stirring through a plea for bounty from a beacon,
Stirring to seek knowledge, not once
under whose guidance humankind has never strayed from the right course.
Did people go astray in purpose, it guiding them

He has shone on the red hill as a sun of guidance,
The red dawn rose with guidance
so its radiance is never hidden from sight.
Not hidden from sights were its expanses

So we would not have received gifts but for its generosity,
So we never clenched, but for her virtues
nor extended a hand but for its favors.
Nor extended a hand, but for her hands

This is the caliphate: he has raised its landmarks high;
This caliphate elevated its landmarks
where are its Mahdi and Hadi compared with him?
So where is its Mahdi other than it guiding?

This is eloquence: should its battalions arrive,
This eloquence, if its battalions come
Quss of Iyad restrains the onslaught of their hands.
The grip of the mighty suffices its hands

This is generosity: should its watering places dry,
This generosity, if its springs run dry
its morning clouds are moistened by its Hatim's palm.
The palms of its Hatem drip with its valleys

This is knowledge: should its stars lose their way,
This knowledge, if its planets go astray
the rays of dawn guide them and offer them as gifts.
Rays of dawn guide it and lead it

Here are the petitioners, setting out full of hope;
This bravery, if it undertakes in determination
here are the enemies, when their aggression shows itself.
This enmity, if it shows its transgression

His bounty freely showers the petitioners and aids them;
Its sword volunteers it, subdued
his sword forcibly repels the enemies and slays them.
Its blade returns it, conquered and devastated

The radiance of his beaming face is plain to his petitioner;
The flashes of its clouds portend rainfall for its asker
indeed, its morning flashes vie with the lightning.
For every lightning inspires its generosity

So every flash of generosity he creates,
And every gleaming for good tidings heralds it
and every dawning radiance of cheer he reveals.

Is there any blessing or favor, to come or already past,
Except the supporter of God's religion extends it?
whose bestower is not the Defender of God's Faith?
The King, Most High, the Bestower whose palm

The beneficent, most exalted king, whose palms have poured
Was enough in generosity, and enemies were restrained
forth bounty, while their foes have been restrained.

He turned his palm to bestow bounty among humankind;
So its scent continues to spread in its valleys
so its evening and morning visitors kept offering praise.

May my lord ever display, among his noble deeds,
What delights the religion and the life prolonging them
those whose continuance gladdens religion and the world.

The doves of thought, in the garden of verse, have become
Crying with dew, watering its valleys
singers of bounty, quenching the thirst of their thirsty ones.
