أيهاO الناظِمُthe poet صِفْdescribe شهْبَbright stars الدُجىthe darkness
أيها الناظِمُ صِفْ شهْبَ الدُجى
إنماonly أسبابُهاtheir causes منfrom سَبَبِكْyour cause
إنما أسبابُها من سَبَبِكْ
O poet, describe the bright stars of night;
O composer, describe the radiance of the night
Their causes stem only from your own.
Its causes are only from your own doing
فحُلاهاfor their adornments فيin سَناءٍglory وسَنىًand radiance
فحُلاها في سَناءٍ وسَنىً
وعُلىًand eminence أوor شُهْرَةٍfame منfrom أدَبِكْyour literary art
وعُلىً أو شُهْرَةٍ من أدَبِكْ
For their adornments—in glory and radiance,
So unravel it into splendor and joy
And eminence or fame—come from your literary art.
And elevation or fame from your refinement
