My heart is enamored of a beautiful gazelle.
My heart is burdened with love for a beautiful gazelle
Her description evokes a luxuriant garden.
Whose description is that of a melodious garden

How many a radiant brow she has revealed!
How often has she glanced with bright black eyes
Her beauty shines before the beholder's eye.
Her beauty is apparent to the beholder

O you whose eyelids shed flowing tears
And who will aid ribs whose embers blaze?
And whose ardour sets alight the ribs

My censurers reproached me when I disclosed my yearning.
My critics blamed me when I complained of passion
Yet the sun does not hide itself from eyes.
Though the sun does not veil itself from eyes

My body is empty and my heart faint
For a time of union that has passed and gone.
From the loss of a union now passed

Would that I could one day see her beauty wane
By one whose beauty defies the describer's account.
She whose beauty defeats all attempts at description

I could not bear estrangement from her protection
Until I brought the mounts to rest there in haste,
Until I hurried to her on foot

From one you find a lion in battle.
With one who fiercely embraces at meetings

From him, generosity's rain in giving, and the hopeful one's succor,
A raincloud of dew in his munificence and a savior of the hopeful and needy
And the helper of the needy hopeful one's quest,

And the dispeller of darkness with his blazing light,
The protector of his kingdom's kings, my lord Al-Hajjaj
And the lord of its kings, Abu al-Hajjaj.
He appears to eyes like the dawning morn

His appearance shines before the eyes like morning;
His charm like the flowers of gardens in their scent
His praise is fragrant as the blossoms of gardens.

The doves of my thought have echoed it in song;
My passion adorned him with necklaces and pendants
The beauties of the pages have adorned him with sashes.

The champions of the faith are the root of his eminence;
Hawks of war on the day of battle a piercing blade
Broad-winged eagles of war on the day of encounter.
His right hand is open when seekers implore

And his right hand, when he gives freely to those who seek him,
A law of munificence that abrogation has not erased
Is a law of bounty that no abrogation has shaken.
This - but my heart is stricken by distance
هذاthis لكِنْyet جَفاhas been cruel to فُؤاديmy heart البُعْدُdistance

All this—yet distance has been cruel to my heart;
Its only relief lament or passion
So it holds nothing but burning grief or yearning.
Will a day fulfill its promise of reunion

Will a promise of reunion one day be fulfilled,
And immerse me in the rapture of joy or passion?
And will lowland or highland be flooded with favor?
My heart shot an arrow into separation

فالوَجْدُso yearning علىover جَميعهِall of it مُسْتَحوذُholds sway
Separation's piercing arrow has struck my heart;
And passion has taken hold over all of it
So yearning has taken possession of it wholly.
None can deliver it but the union

Nor any refuge but the lord of humankind.
He surpasses all others in sight or report

He has surpassed humankind in appearance or inward worth;
A master whose guidance delights the perceiving eye
A lord whose bearing delights the beholder's eye.
His beauty shines like the dawning day

His splendor shines like radiant morning,
The stars around disappear at his appearance
So the horizon's stars fade around his presence.
He makes all past and future insignificant

He makes those gone before forgotten and outstrips all to come,
Promises kept or broken, fulfilled or pending
In promise and threat, whether leaving them unfulfilled or carrying them out.
He remains secured in attaining perfection

He has never ceased to attain the qualities of perfection,
And from his overflowing grace rewards every benefactor
And from his bounty comes a reward for every doer of good.

A lord who, like Time, has assailed his enemies;
Becoming just, establishing equity among us
He has become a benefactor among us, just and equitable.

So you find them coming to water like flocks of sandgrouse.

Or you address me in writing or in speech,
To gain the choicest portion in this life

To win from this world the fullest share!
My composition is a limpid, harmonious string

O Yusuf, whether in beauty or in kingship,
I remove by it the bitterness of misfortune
My verse is like lustrous pearls upon a string.

Through it I dispel the vicissitudes of dark calamities,
I am your slave, O Imam of Justice
When you said, “Abu al-Husayn is my servant, my possession.”
O Khazrajite in lineage and origin

O Gatherer of the dew into a whole
And O Khazraji by lineage and origin,
When none in this age are mine but you

And O you who bring all generosity together,
My tear and passionate heart roam distraught
If you are not for me in this age, who will be?
Suffused with passion like the waving banners

My tears and heart: the one streams, the other wanders in love;
My eyelids and love are lasting and eternal
It flutters with yearning like waving banners.
As the sword of Islam’s champion
جَفْنيmy eyelid وغَراميand my passion دائِمٌenduring أوor دامِbleeding
كمِثْلِlike حُسامِthe sword of ناصرِthe defender of الإسلامِIslam
My eyelid and passion: the one bleeds, the other endures,
My passion - how can counting grasp it?
Like the sword of the defender of Islam.
How many outstretched hands have I extended to its furthest limit
وجْديmy yearning ماnot أنْat all ياخُذْهُcan encompass it الإمْكانُpossibility

هلّاwhy not يُحْصيcount شُهْبَthe stars of الدُجىnight حُسْبانُa reckoning
My yearning cannot be encompassed by what is possible;
I express it in sighs that surpass all counting
Can any reckoning count the stars of night?
A meaning that passion wills, explicitly or allusively
والحُبُّand love أبانواthey revealed عندَat ماthe time when قدindeed بانُواthey departed

فآليْتُso I swore تعودُwould return بالرِّضىwith favor الأزْمانُthe days
And they revealed love when they departed;
A gazelle who accepts no contentment but what he dictates
So I swore that days would return with favor.
No purpose but what pleases him

فكَمْso how many أمَدٍa span بلغْتُI have reached منهُof it الأقصىthe farthest limit
The heart holds passion beyond all counting;
The sword of patience - whenever I unsheathe it
How many times I have reached its furthest limit!
Passion fells whatever resolve wields it
أُبْديهI reveal it جَوىًas burning grief يكلُّfails عنهُbefore it الإحْصاreckoning

I reveal it as burning grief that defeats all reckoning,
Would that bygone days might return
As meaning, however love wills it, or as explicit words.
And intimacy be restored to wholeness
ظَبْيٌa gazelle لاno رِضىًcontentment إلاexcept بماin what يقْضيهِhe decrees
ولاand no قصْدَaim إلاexcept الذيthat which يُرْضيهِpleases him
A gazelle: no contentment save in what he decrees,
I hoped - but does love acknowledge hope?
And no aim except what pleases him.
Or after it does sorrow avail or benefit?
للصّبْرِpatience has حُسامٌa sword كلّماwhenever أُنضيهِI unsheathe it

Patience has a sword; whenever I unsheathe it,
This is my heart, youthful toward him, intent
Love blunts whatever its resolve makes keen.
Passion in me has reached its zenith

Would that a bygone time might return,
This is my ambition - if he should attain what he desires
And companionship's circle gather within it.
Then my tears are copious and my ardour overflowing
طمِعْتُI hoped وهلْand does فيin الحُبِّlove يُجْديavail الطمعُhope

I hoped—but can hope avail in love,
She drew it deftly with fingers white as camomile
Or can grief thereafter avail or be of use?
From the palm of the Imam of West and al-Andalus

لقدindeed بلغَhas reached الغرامُpassion منّيwithin me مَبْلَغاa great extent
Here is my heart: it yearned for him and inclined toward him.
Revealing the light of dawn to the illuminator
Passion has indeed taken great hold of me.
The lion of saddle-bags and the full moon of majlis
هذاthis طمَعيmy hope لوif only نالِit attained منْهُfrom him ماwhat ابْتغَىit sought

Here is my hope—if only it gained from him what it sought!
The guidance of his hand disperses the wings of night when it descends
So tears have overflowed, and my yearning's embers have raged.
His palm is hoped for protection and dreaded in war
جادَتْit poured freely فحَكتْso it resembled صوْبَthe downpour of الحَياrain المُنْبَجِسِgushing forth

They poured freely, matching the torrent of gushing rain,
It wearied Jarir and al-A’sha in description
From the palm of the imam of the West and al-Andalus.
So how can verse match it or approach it?
يُبْديreveals نورَthe light of الصّباحِmorning للمُقْتَبِسِto the seeker of a spark
يبْدوappears أسَدَthe lion of السّرْجِthe saddle وبدْرَand the full moon of المجْلِسِthe assembly
He reveals morning's light to the seeker of a spark;
Take it as the meadow’s adab in its irrigation
He appears a lion in the saddle and a full moon in the assembly.
He brought it life with rainclouds of munificence when he revived it
يجلوdispels هَدْيُهُhis bearing جِنْحَthe darkness of الدُجىnight إذwhen يَغْشىit envelops

His bearing dispels the dark of night when it descends;
A composition that ennobled a servant through his Master
His hand is hoped for in peace and feared in war.
With excellent work that Allah gifted him

His description has baffled Jarir and al-A'sha;
For him the caravan is challenged and the deserts traversed
How then can verse or prose do him justice?
The chronicles of his gifts are recited from his right hand
خُذْهُtake it أدَباًas literature كالرّوْضِlike a garden فيin ريّاهُits fragrance

Accept it as a work of letters, fragrant as a garden;
By the bounty of his hands every thirst is quenched
He revived it with generosity's rain when he greeted it.
He utters his praise in secret or softly breathed

Verse by which the servant was honored by his lord,
A master of consummate character and perfecter of bounty
God has endowed him with gracious favor.
Made clear by the complete man of dew

Toward him the caravan is urged on by song, and deserts are folded away;
By it his servant attained hopes
Tales of gifts from his right hand are recounted.
Nobility profits from his glance and wealth
منfrom جَدْوىthe bounty of يديهِhis hands كُلُّevery ظامٍthirsty one يَرْوَىis quenched

From the bounty of his hands every thirsty one is quenched;
My Master who guides creation with guidance
He utters his praise in secret or in whispered converse.
One whose attributes all creation wearied in describing
مَوْلىًa lord بالجميلِwith good deeds يَشفَعُjoins الإجْمالاgracious treatment

A lord who joins gracious treatment with good deeds,
When you attained the most exalted rank of perfection
And reveals perfection through the fullness of his bounty.
Your servant attained what he hoped for in this life
بهِthrough him عبْدُهُhis servant قدindeed بلغَhas attained الآمالاhopes

Through him his servant has attained his hopes;
So his regard confers status and wealth.
