فقدْfor indeed كانhe was يومَon the day النّدىof bounty تِرْبَهُits peer
May the rain water his grave's soil on the day of parting,
The rain watered the land of al-Nuway on the day of grief
for, on the day of bounty, he was its peer.
While it had watered the land of al-Nada on the day of joy
وكانand he was حُساماًa keen sword لحَرْبِfor battle against العِدَىthe foes
ففلَّتْso blunted أكُفُّthe hands الرّدَىof death غرْبَهُhis edge
And he was a keen sword for battle against the foes,
It was a sword against the evil enemies
but the hands of death blunted his edge.
But the hands of fate made it go westward
وكانand he was غَماماًa cloud يُحيّيgreets الوجودَexistence
ويُحْييand gives life فقدْyet indeed منعَتْthey withheld سَكْبَهُhis downpour
And he was a cloud that greeted all existence
It was a cloud that gave life to existence
and gave it life; yet they withheld his downpour.
And gave life, but then its pouring was prevented
وكانand he was سماءًa sky لنورِfor the light الهُدَىof guidance
فقدْyet indeed قلَبَتْthey overturned للثّرىto the dust قُطْبَهُhis pole
And he was a sky for the light of guidance,
It was a heaven for the light of guidance
yet they overturned his pole into the dust.
But fate turned its pole to the ground
وكانand he was أماناًsafety لمنْfor whoever أمَّهُsought him
فَماso what بالهاtheir condition رَوَّعَتْthey terrified سِرْبَهُhis flock
And he was safety for whoever sought him;
It was safety for the one who sought its refuge
why, then, did they terrify his flock?
But why did it frighten its drinking-place
وكانand he was لقُصّادِهِfor his seekers موْرِداًa watering-place
فأمْسىso he came to evening وقدand already كدّرَتْthey muddied شِرْبَهُhis share of water
And he was a watering-place for those who sought him;
It was a watering place for its archers
then he reached evening, his share of water muddied.
But it ended up muddying its drinking water
وكانand he was لدولةِfor the realm مَولىof the lord المُلوكِof kings

مُعِزّاًa giver of honor تودُّlong for العُلَىthe heights قُرْبَهُhis nearness
And he was, for the realm of the lord of kings,
It was a source of glory for the state of the Master of Kings
a giver of honor; the heights longed for his nearness.
Whose highness wished to have it near
وكانand he was تهابُdread العِدَىthe foes بطْشَهُhis crushing might
فماso what للّياليfor the nights أتَتْthey came to حربَهُwar against him
And his foes would dread his crushing might;
The enemies used to fear its might
why, then, did the nights wage war on him?
But why did the nights come against it with war

He stood firm, a mountain of guidance and bounty;
It hoisted a flag for guidance and dew
then he reached morning, his ravine shaken.
But it ended up shaking its hills

His star fell from the heaven of glory,
Its star fell from the heaven of highness
shining; the dust became its setting-place.
Lighting the earth as its grave

Had the horizon been just, after
If the horizon had been just after it fell
that fall it would not have spent the night raising its bright stars.
It would not have risen shedding its meteors

And had the rain been just, it would have saluted the haven
If the rain had been just to a living protector
of a youth who never ceased sending forth his clouds.
A youth who never stopped sending its clouds

Oh, what a tomb, beside which he came to rest,
Oh grave that hosts him
on the morning he made his caravan kneel there!
The morning it halted his riding

It is the grave that was granted the one
found the palace's breadth sufficient.
Who never accepted the expanse of a palace as enough

After Ali, do you see Time
How far `Ali is! Do you see time
grown proud, flaunting its conceit among mankind?
Appearing to the world showing its wonders through him
وفَىhe kept faith للّياليwith the nights فخانَتْbut they betrayed عُلاهُhis lofty rank

He kept faith with the nights, but they betrayed his lofty rank;
He was loyal to the nights but they betrayed his highness
he appeased them, yet they welcomed his reproach.
He reproached them and they accepted his reproach

Ask in the sanctuary about Ali, who had
So ask the protected lands about `Ali when
defended it—why did they seek to despoil him?
They sought his support against the aggression

And they brought all that resisted the reins;
And they came with every difficult crisis
he tamed its unruliness through his resolve.
So he made easy what was difficult with his resolve

And he healed them when they complained of an intractable
And he rectified them when they complained of insoluble problems
calamity and sought his remedy.
From calamities, seeking his healing

He was kingship; they lulled his eyelid to sleep.
He is the kingdom whose eyelids night has put to sleep
He was glory; they overturned his heart.
He is the glory whose heart fate has tossed around

So this emirate shows lamenting
for him, on the morning he met his death:
For him the morning after his star set

With eyes that lost his beauty
and from ribs that held love for him.
And ribs that were granted his love

O brother of the valiant imam, who,
The defender of the Imam, the resolute one who
whenever a matter arose, was equal to its crisis—
Sufficed when a matter was difficult

The hand of death has snatched you from protecting
the sanctuary of one whose plundering the foes dread.
Those whom the enemies fear to raid

So, after that, he embraced patience only
After it, only patience was relied upon
to obey his Lord through it.
To obey God through it

It gave you from the rain what has narrated
praise of you has resembled the flowers of the hills.
The blossoms of meadows were its absence

and strengthened His party in war against them!
And supported their war party in their war

When the transgressor hoped for its conquest

When he unleashed his anger at its gate

To settle him in a Garden brought near
and He sent down His scriptures describing it.
And revealed in describing it His Books

How many mercies have guarded his burial niche,
So how many mercies did His grace envelop!
and how many good deeds have erased his sin!
And how many good deeds erased his sins!
