دعِleave المِصْباحَthe lamp وانظُرand look ياO نَديميmy boon companion
لشمسِat the sun الكاسِthe cup فيin الليلِthe night البهيمِpitch-dark
Leave the lamp and look, O my boon companion,
My friend, leave the lamp and behold
at the sun of the cup in the pitch-dark night.
The sun of the goblet in the bleak night.
ولاand do not تنْسَforget الصَّبوحَthe morning draught إذاwhen تجلّىshines forth
لكto you الإصْباحُthe dawn عنfrom وجْهٍa face وَسيمِhandsome
Nor forget the morning draught when there appears
Do not forget dawn when it reveals itself,
to you the dawn, unveiling a handsome face,
As morning dawns upon a comely face.
وحيَّتْكَand greeted you الأزاهِرُthe blossoms منfrom رُباهاtheir hills
بماwith what تُهْديهِthey offer it فيin طَيِّthe folds النّسيمِthe breeze
and the blossoms greet you from their hills
The flowers greet you, blown in the breeze's fold,
with what they offer in the folds of the breeze.
Bearing the gifts the zephyr brings in its flight.
فتُلْفيso you find كلَّماwhenever حيّاgreets صَباحاًin the morning
صحيحَtrue الوجْدِlonging يُرْوَىis recounted عنْfrom سَقيمِan ailing one
So whenever it offers a morning greeting, you find
Each time a morn you hail, sound of fervor,
true longing recounted by an ailing one.
A fevered one is slaked by its sight.
تنعّمْtake pleasure كيفَhowever شِئْتَyou wish بِهاin them وقُلْand tell ليme
هلِwhether الجنّاتُthe gardens جنّاتُgardens النّعيمِbliss
Delight in them as you wish, and tell me:
Revel in it as you wish, and tell me,
Are these gardens the gardens of bliss?
Are the gardens the gardens of delight?
وغانِيةٍand many a beauty تُريكَshows you السّحْرَmagic حَقاًtruly
حَلالاًlawful ليْسَis not بالسّحْرِthe magic الذّميمِblameworthy
And many a beauty shows you genuine magic,
A songstress shows you true magic, lawful,
lawful, not the blameworthy kind of magic.
Not the accursed sorcery of spite.
فكمْfor how many فيin الروْضِthe garden مِنof زهْرٍblossoms نَثيرٍstrewn
وكمْand how many فيin اللّفْظِspeech منof دُرٍّpearls نَظيمِstrung
For so many blossoms lie strewn in the garden,
In the garden, countless fragrant blooms,
and so many pearls are strung in speech.
And in verse, many a refined gem bright.
خليليَmy friend دعْleave off تذَكُّرَremembering ماwhat تقضّىhas passed
وماand what قدalready مرّhas passed منْof عهْدٍa time كَريمِnoble
My friend, stop recalling what has passed,
My friend, cease remembering what is past,
and the noble times that have gone by.
And times of grace gone in life's flight.
ولاand do not تُرْسِلْsend forth عُهودَsuccessive showers الدّمْعِtears مهْماhowever often
تذكّرْتَyou recall المعاهِدَthe haunts بالغَميمِat al-Ghamim
And do not let loose showers of tears, however often
Do not let tears' covenants flow however much
you recall the haunts at al-Ghamim.
You recall the departed friend in the night.
ولاand do not تُطِلِprolong التّفَكُّرَreflection واجْتَنِبْهُand avoid it
وهاتِand bring الكأسَthe cup منfrom كفّthe palm النّديمِthe boon companion
And do not prolong reflection; shun it,
Do not prolong reflection, shun it,
and bring the cup from the boon companion's palm.
And bring the cup from the boon companion's hand.
وعلّلْand soothe قلْبَكَyour heart المُضْنَىexhausted وشَفّعْand pair
جَديدَnew هَواكَyour love بالخَمْرِwith the wine القَديمِold
And soothe your exhausted heart, and pair
Give your grieving heart a reason, match
your new love with old wine.
Your passion new with wine aged and grand.
فكمْfor how many فيناamong us لذلِكَto that end منof مُديرٍa cupbearer
لهاof it ولشُرْبِهاand for drinking it كمhow many منof مُديمِa persistent drinker
For how many among us, to that end, pass around
For that, how many revolving among us,
the wine—and how many persist in drinking it!
Revolving around it and its demand.
ولاand do not تيْأسْdespair منَof العَفْوِthe pardon المُرجّىhoped-for
فربُّكَfor your Lord غافِرُforgiver الذّنْبِsin العظيمِgrave
And do not despair of the hoped-for pardon,
Do not despair of hoped-for pardon,
for your Lord forgives grievous sin.
Your Lord forgives sins, be they blight.
ولكنّbut اعْتَمِدْrely فيin كُلّevery أمْرٍmatter
علىon ماwhat جاءَhas come فيin الذّكْرِthe Scripture الحَكيمِwise
But in every matter rely
But in all affairs, rely
on what is set forth in the wise Scripture.
On what is in the Wise Remembrance's light.
