For granting after refusal a sweeter occasion
So calamities grew grievous upon them, at ruin's bidding.
Is afforded the meaning of nearness by one who does not separate

Had they answered a summons from Yusuf,
And the feast came to you so you fulfilled its right
A pavilion of gracious protection would have been spread.
With what suits the world and the religion appropriately

When the night of sins grows dark, Yusuf
For that the horizons praise you with what you deserve
Makes the dawn of favor, pardon, and forbearance break.
The wests from their horizons and easts

The tongue of conquest declares in its open courts:
So you congratulated it on a day most fragrant and a
Hark! Hasten willingly toward glory, and race one another!
Noble season the beautiful deed accompanies it
وقدand indeed نالَattained منهُمْagainst them قصْدَهُits aim جُندُكَyour army الذيwhich

Your army has achieved its aim against them,
My master I have not fulfilled even if I was first
With a commander who drives it onward through your victory's might.
In description my intention I by it am speaking
ويستَوْقِفُand arrests الأبصارَthe eyes رمْيُthe shooting of قِسيّهِits bows

The shooting of its bows arrests the eyes,
And if I had wings of darkness extended for me
And archer and watcher there delight discerning minds.
And from the light of dawn ones taking off

It held out and resisted, as passion is concealed
I would have made them from the crop of my thoughts away
Despite himself, by a lovesick man yearning for beauty.
The elderly fall short of them in the inner chambers
وماand not هُوit إلاexcept فيin يَدَيْكَyour two hands زِمامُهُits reins

Yet its reins are nowhere but in your hands,
For were it not for you the markings of my thoughts would not have spread
Like a runaway returning after estrangement.
And my gardens for prosody would not have flourished

لكَيْماso that تُوافيshe may arrive بالرِّضىwith consent وتوافِقُand agree
A noble beauty who played chase with her embrace,
And none of my poetry whenever I intended praise
So she might come in willing consent and accord.
Would have revived for you a garden of beautiful charm
فَلِلْمَنْحِso, for giving بعْدَafter المنْعِwithholding أعْذَبُthe sweetest موْقِعٍeffect

Giving after withholding has the sweetest effect:
So it lasted what the pilgrims marched to Mina
Can one who never parts savor what closeness means?
And what appeared in the wings of the shadows a lightning

Eid al-Adha has come to you, and you fulfilled its due
With what befits worldly affairs and religion.

For that, they offer the praise you deserve—
The western and eastern reaches of their horizons.

May you be congratulated upon it, a radiant day and a season
Noble, accompanied by gracious deeds.

O my lord, though I be inventive, my words have not fulfilled
My purpose in description through all that I utter,

Even if I had inks from the wing of darkness
At hand, and scrolls from the light of morning.
فدونكَهاso, take her منfrom خِدْرthe inner chamber of فكريَmy thought غادةًa tender maiden

Take her, then, a tender maiden from my thought's inner chamber,
Before whom the maidens in secluded chambers fall short.

But for you, the fragrant breezes of my thought would never have spread,
Nor gardens for verse have grown delicate and delightful.

Nor would there be from my verse, when I sought a panegyric,
A garden greeting you, wondrously beautiful and pure.

May she be immortalized as long as pilgrims journey to Mina,
And lightning gleams in the wing of deep darkness.
