Full moons on the horizon of kingship—their rising enchants.

So Málaga and its quarters have shone.

Whenever the blossoms smile within it, unceasingly

The clouds of the horizon pour down their tears in response.

Its delegations alight in its great valley,

So there their coming to water and entering it grow sweet.

And how many dwellings there have the riders alighted at,

To wake with even far-off hopes close at hand.

So whoever hoped in it attained his goal, and his purpose was aided,

And its fearful ones were made safe from time's vicissitudes.

And since it placed its hopes in Yusuf, lord of the caliphs,

Can the befalling of time's calamities then be feared?

And its delegations came to the auspicious review,

So their throngs were a lovely sight upon those open plains.

And the Defender of God's Faith—his face rises

Like the forenoon sun, whose rising dazzles the eyes.

And can anyone conceal the radiant sun,

While its rays proclaim it throughout east and west?

    فمَن طائِعُ الأمْلاكِ أو من مُطيعُها

    Through the Defender of God's Faith, its domain has gained might;

So who among kings submits, or who commands their obedience?

You made the grape-cluster's blood flow for God's sake, revealing

Deeds of righteousness that you proclaim throughout the world.

Therefore rain lavishly watered its broad riverbeds,

Where bright blossoms were unveiled by its spring.

Yours is command in whatever you wish, unopposed,

For all the earth is in both your hands.

And your good fortunes bring what you seek against your foes,

Indeed, whoever defies them has strayed, and whoever obeys them has triumphed.

And the steeds' tracks leave prayer niches,

Before which, in the fray, the slain bow in prostration.

Where the unsheathed sword is a garden's river,

Its fresh blood glows like roses along the river's two banks.

The enemies of the faith seek to flee from it,

But where can they find escape from its two edges?

And who is like the Banu Nasr when they enter the fray?

Before them, the champions' submission is revealed.

How many a band among them, in annihilating the foes

And bestowing bounty on petitioners, finds its delight!

    وليسَ عجيباً أن حَكتْها فُروعُها

    And in the spreading tree of the Ansar, their roots were noble;

And no wonder their branches have taken after them.

It is as though the unbelievers' lands, in their entirety,

Were returning to the rule of the sovereign of the two shores.

And many a swimming steed outstrips every passing beast,

When the one who startles the desert gazelles appears.

So the steeds bend tenderly over the champions, until they seem

To each steed like hearts enclosed within its ribs.

Your praises are flowers in fragrance; if there waft

Over them the breezes of my thoughts, they spread them abroad.

    وحاشاكَ يا مَوْلَى المُلوكِ تُضيعُها

    And here they are, spread before you as pleas;

And far be it from you, O lord of kings, to let them go to waste.

I set their lot-arrows spinning in the arena of eloquence,

So their wondrous beauty shines forth in descriptions of you.

And who can help me describe some of them, when indeed

Their finest wordsmith would surely fall short, were he to attempt them?

O my lord, live on for noble deeds, granting them

Bounty, and making the calamities of time tremble.

And the bondsman of your generous bounty, whenever

He ventures a complaint, you listen to it.

Your slaves, O my lord, are truly like me:

Through your might, far be it that their submission be sought.
