O mercy of God upon humankind,

And lord of kings and protector of the land,

You have surely secured its far reaches, as their champion,

With gleaming swords and dusky lances.

And glory to God for a frontier where there encamped

Your troops, amid the hills and hollows.

And you built up its outward splendor, displaying

A might that decreed humiliation for the defiant.

You established the rites of the faith of guidance

There, and fulfilled the duty of jihad.

The battalions upon its soil are reinforced

By angels above seven mighty heavens,

Until you turn the enemy's dwellings

Into a ranging-ground for noble, poised steeds.

And when the imam of guidance was borne far away

By mounts that brought the time of separation near,

Leaving his servant behind, consumed with love,

His passion enduring, his sleeplessness long,

He longs to journey, while his eyelids

Wander, streaming tears, through every valley.

And there is no rain but that within the eyelids,

And no lightning but that within the heart.

And they did not leave him behind; instead, they

Shot him with arrows of the enemies' speech.

Some people say, 'They did not leave him

For nothing'—and they shunned the path of sound judgment.

And some spread the rumor that I was abandoned,

Thus stoking fiercely blazing noonday heats.

Did they not know that I am the servant of one

Whose bounty's returning showers keep visiting me,

And that the imam of mankind has never ceased

To grant more honor when asked for more?

For the champion of the faith of guidance is my champion,

    Despite whoever comes seeking defiance.

Far be it that our appeals should fail,

And far be it that our phoenix should be caught.

    فللعَبْدِ كمْ نِعمةٍ قدْ أفادْ

    And I have indeed been graced with his mark of honor;

How many blessings he has bestowed upon his servant!

A letter came from the imam of mankind,

So it was the thing desired, and the resort sought.

    فجَدّ اشتِياقِي لهُ حينَ جادْ

    And his rain greeted me in my thirst;

So my longing for him grew keener when he gave.

From him, the keenest sword is in my hand,

And on my shoulder, from him, the fairest baldric.

And my lord did not forget his bondsman,

Despite the distance, at last revealing his affection.

And oh, how often he has given me his favor,

And never has he begun a kindness without repeating it.

And glory to God for what I gained when

I lodged with him upon a soft bed!

O hour of meeting that has passed,

Will you not one day return to us?

And O time of favor that has gone by,

Perhaps you are among what passes, then returns.

And the sea of bounty will bring you back,

He who guides mankind to the path of right guidance.

For seeing my lord is the highest wish,

And therein lies the goal—what an excellent goal!

Would that he always granted me that sight,

For how many a hope is fulfilled thereby!

I shall attain what I hope for; indeed, I

Rely on none but my lord.
