بالنجْمِby the star منّيfrom me وهْوَwhile he is شمْسُthe sun of الضُّحىthe morning
بالنجْمِ منّي وهْوَ شمْسُ الضُّحى
How wondrous that Joseph should take his bearings
How wondrous that Yusuf finds his way
by a star of mine, when he is the morning sun!
By the star that is me, though he is the morning sun!
أبْدَىshowed كِلاناboth of us الهَدْيَguidance لكنْbut قَضىhe decreed
أبْدَى كِلانا الهَدْيَ لكنْ قَضى
أنْthat أمْنَعَI withhold الجودَbounty وأنْand that يمْنَحاhe bestow
أنْ أمْنَعَ الجودَ وأنْ يمْنَحا
We both proffered our gifts; yet it was decreed
We both showed guidance, yet he decreed
that I should deny him bounty, while he should bestow it.
That I withhold bounty and that he bestow it.
