Your abode is a refuge and shelter for those who seek you,

And a pleasant watering place for the needy who hope.

And your generosity is a sea for supplicants; if they sail

In ships of hope, your door is a harbor.

And by God, with your face shining, I cannot tell

Whether it is the forenoon's light or its own light that gleams.

When panegyrists begin their speech one day,

Each begins with what your good fortunes reveal.

And from you have appeared signs for God's faith,

Pointing to mighty victory and foretelling it.

Likewise, one hopes the horizon's clouds will pour down

    When the sparkling lightning shines.

If the full moon fails to shine brightly in the darkness,

Then your face gives more guiding light than it, and is brighter.

And if the persistent rain withholds its bounty,

Then your generosity fills the earth's horizons.

For no land fails to seek you as its ruler,

And no raindrop arises except from your clouds.

So the light of guidance never sets for its beholder,

And the fire of hospitality never goes out for a seeker of gifts.

When the lord, the caliph Yusuf, is mentioned,

With him, noble praise ends and begins.

And it is enough for a master of verse and prose that he

Falls short in what he deems fine and composes.

    إذا عُدِّدَ الأعْلامُ فهْوَ المبدأُ

    For Abu al-Hajjaj, my lord, is an authority;

When the eminent are counted, he comes first.

When the halos of a horizon gather,

They furnish his assembly with a softly laid couch.

And who cares if the noonday heat blazes,

When his bounty slakes thirst whenever it parches?

His generosity calls, and the shades are restful:

Come, bring whatever you wish to the water, and enjoy yourselves!

And whoever 'This is approved' has worn thin with its promise,

Then through al-Nasir, the lord, he regains health and recovers.

From it, the radiant hand traces a signature,

He kisses it, honored and fortunate.

He is the most pleasing king, whose firm resolves

    Make every successful aim attainable.

He charges, and the sharpened blades seem

To drive back from the land anyone who dares.

And through good fortune before the sword, if he enters battle,

He keeps harm from the upright faith and repels it.

Then the spear rejoices there, while terror frowns,

And the sword preaches there, while calamity strikes suddenly.

His example is followed in steadfast resolve and prudence,

When the banners flutter awhile and grow still.

The burden of the Ansar's struggle was borne

By a valiant man who pays no heed to enemy kings.

The Chosen One saw that the son of their Sa'd

In Mecca could stand in for many and suffice.

God's Book is praise enough for a family

Whose root and origin were noble in Tayba.

And indeed the Book of God—exalted be His majesty—

Has truthful speech, free from falsehood.

When the merits of the exalted Khazraj are counted,

Then who is Amir, or who are Sulaym and Tayy?

O my lord, no poet can describe you,

Even if he were al-Ta'i and al-Mutanabbi.

And how can a writer attempt praise and panegyric,

When your mention is recited and read in the Book?

    فَما بالُه في مطْلبِ العَبْدِ يُبْطِئُ

    Yet, O my lord, your command takes effect;

Why, then, is it slow to fulfill your servant's request?

If he cannot hope for refuge at your side,

Where, O lord of caliphs, can he seek refuge?

And if he has not plucked his gift's blossom from the garden of wishes,

Then beneath what shades of generosity can he rest?

And the arrow of my hope strikes true whenever it is loosed

By praise; so marvel at how it shoots and misses!

Your bounty is sweet to those who come to drink, and everyone who

Hopes for it is never driven from its watering place.

And my verse is pleasing only because

It is a pearl in a sea of bounty from your right hand.

May you endure for God's faith, championing its people,

And protect them from every calamity and watch over them.
