Indeed, she whose love has enthralled my heart—

The nights have decreed to prolong her absence.

How strange she is, destroying by her absence

A yearning heart that never ceased to be her dwelling!

Oh, if only she had pitied a tormented, love-stricken man,

Who would not have known love's meaning but for her.

The reproachers claimed that my heart was in love.

They spoke truly, but it desires none but her.

It can never hope to yield to forgetfulness,

After what her eyes have done to it.

They said, 'She feigned forgetting your bond of love when there departed

From her the riding camels, though you do not forget her.'

So I replied, 'Stop! I do not heed your reproaches.

And did you not know that I love her?'

How often I have kept vigil, saying, 'Oh, if only she—

If only she would grant a day of meeting her!'

If only she bestowed the slightest glance,

My hand would win its wishes from her days.

If she consented, I would give all that

My right hand possessed, to win her pleasure.

Until she allowed a glimpse of union with her,

Granted by the days after their unkindness.

She withheld union for a time, and when

She was generous to me, Time planned her departure.

The sweetness of union was but a flash of lightning.

    Ah for her! After that—ah!

I remember her: the magic of her eyelids

Forbids all minds to keep their patience.

I remember her: the roses of her cheeks—

Her glance bars anyone who seeks to pluck their fruit.

I remember her, and the perfume whose scent is kindled

From her; it revived the soul when it greeted it.

She resembles gardens in freshness and in graces,

So I yearn whenever her east wind blows.

She resembles the stars in loftiness and radiance,

So, enamored of her, I spend the night watching her.

God be praised for her countenance, which has been made to rise,

Thus unveiling to lovers the sun of her forenoon!

God be praised—how sweet the beauties of her face,

How delicate her essence, and how sweet her mouth!

God be praised—how sweet her graces, which

Have left my heart enamored of her charms!

How wondrous she is! She dwells in a love-enslaved man's heart,

Passion-bound, he meets her only in thought.

And though I am enamored of her abode, my longing

For her dwelling is for the sake of her essence.

And I answer whoever has blamed me for mentioning her:

'The beloved's home most deserves your love.'

She is the court of the lord, the caliph Yusuf,

The glory of kings, their leader and their lord.

His riding camels departed in the forenoon from her abode,

And victory leads them toward their destination.

Drawing forth resolves toward the lofty mountain,

Whose edges noble virtues refused to blunt.

Shooting at the distant target with arrows

Which loyalty has shot toward their mark,

To occupy its summit, as greatness desires,

And undo the bonds of the faction of error.

Are not his resolves a dawn that, whenever

That faction strays from the straight path, guides it back?

    وفّى حُقوقَ المَجْدِ إذْ وافاها

    A lord from him, a champion, entered the precincts;

He fulfilled glory's dues when he came to them.

Ruin upon them! They did not appreciate the worth of what

His right hand lavished from its bounty.

For it is the hand that never vied with the rain clouds

Without its bounty surpassing the morning clouds.

Are not among your qualities the virtues

Of which kings have come to boast?

Are not among your qualities the aspirations

Whose heights the shining stars seek to attain?

Thus—and, O God, alas for Granada,

A home whose memory we renew despite separation.

When my lord went far from her, she was left

With her state and her adornments transformed.

For wherever al-Nasir, the well-pleasing king, settles,

We find noble virtues, loftiness, and prestige.

Never did she repeat her cry in longing for him

Without resolve barring reunion with her.

Never did urgent longing parch her plains

Without the rain of tears already having watered them.

Clouds of tears, whenever the rain withholds its bounty,

Are driven by remembrance to water her.

So anguished longing overturns the hearts of her people,

When he avoided her sanctuary by keeping far away.

And the souls of her people wander in remembrance of him,

Enamored of the bounty he has bestowed upon them.

They spread their palms in prayer for your victory,

And begged God to grant you lasting life.
