بماwith what أُثْنيI praise علىfor تلكَthat المَثابَهْthe recompense
فأرْضَىso I am content بالإنالةِwith the bestowal والإنابَهْand the return
With what shall I praise that recompense,
With what praise I extol that sublime one
and be content with the bestowal and the return?
I am pleased with attaining and turning to Him
ونظْمُكَand your verse ماnot وَفَيْتُI paid fully لهُto it بحَقٍّwith its due
سوَىexcept روحيmy soul مُقابِلةًin exchange for ثَوابَهْits reward
And I have not paid your verse its due,
And your composition I did not do justice
save with my soul, offered in return for its reward.
Except my soul facing its reward
أتىit came بعَقيلةٍwith a noble lady راقَتْwas enchanting جَمالاًin beauty
فقدْso indeed هامَbecame enamored الفُؤادُthe heart بهاwith her صَبابَهْin ardent longing
It brought a noble lady of enchanting beauty;
There came Aqila of beautiful perfection
so my heart was lost in ardent longing for her.
So my heart became enamored with her charm
كلِفْتُI became infatuated بهاwith her فرَكْبُso the caravan الوجْدِof passion لمّاwhen

I became enamored of her; so when the caravan of passion
I was commissioned with her so the intensity of passion
saw my ardor, it made its camels kneel there.
When it saw my commission, it mounted its steed
فَهاso behold حُبّيmy love وهذاand this فَرْطُexcess of شوْقيmy longing
ولاand not even شوْقَthe longing اليَزيدِof Yazid إلىfor حَبابَهْHababa
So behold my love, and this excess of longing—
So this is my love and that is my overflowing ardor
not even Yazid's longing for Hababa compares.
And no ardor exceeds that of one to his beloved
فياso, O للهِto God, in wonder منْهاof her بنتُa daughter فِكْرٍof thought
تُبلّغُshe brings كُلّevery ذيone with أمَلٍhope طِلابَهْhis desired goal
So, O God, what a daughter of thought she is!
So by God what a daughter of reflection is she
She brings each hopeful soul the object of his quest.
Conveying to each hopeful his pursuit
وياand, O للهِto God, in wonder منْthe one who أبْدَىrevealed حُلاهاher adornments
تُشيرُshe points إلىto هَنائيَmy happiness بالكتابَهْthrough writing
And, O God, what a marvel is he who revealed her charms!
And by God who manifested her beauty
She points, in writing, to my happiness.
Hinting to my bliss in writing
