أتُرَىI wonder الخِلُّthe beloved إذْwhen نأَىdeparted أوصىgave instructions بِيconcerning me
كيفَas شاءَwilled الهَوىpassion إلىto أوْصابيmy afflictions
I wonder: did my beloved, when he departed, entrust me
As passion willed, to my afflictions?
طالَماso often بتُّI spent the night أشتَكيcomplaining of نارَthe fire of شوْقِيmy longing
وهْيَand it is شكْوَىa lament of جوىًlove's anguish بغيْرِwithout جَوابِa reply
How often I have spent the night lamenting the fire of my longing,
And it is a lament of love's anguish, without reply.
وتذكّرتُand I remembered عهْدَa time of أُنْسٍcompanionship تقضّىthat had passed
لمْnot يَكنwas فيهِin it زندُthe firestick of أُنسيَmy joy كابِfailing to spark
And I remembered a time of companionship that had passed,
When the firestick of my joy never failed to spark.
ثمthen نادَيْتُI called out فيin الظّلامِthe darkness ودمْعيwhile my tears
بيْنَbetween جفْنَيَّmy two eyelids دائِمُunceasing التّسْكابِpouring
Then I called out in the darkness, while my tears
Poured ceaselessly between my eyelids:
هلْis it? مُباحٌpermitted بعدَafter الصدودِrejection وِصالِيunion with me
أوor مُتاحٌmade possible بعْدَafter البِعادِseparation اقتِرابيmy drawing near
Is union with me permitted after rejection,
Or may I draw near after separation?
ليَI have قلبٌa heart صادٍthirsty إذاwhenever رامَit seeks وِرْداًa drink
ذِيدَwas driven away عنfrom موْرِدِthe watering-place of الثغُورِthe lips العِذابِsweet
I have a thirsty heart: whenever it seeks a drink,
It is driven from the watering-place of sweet lips.
ليI have دمْعٌtears يُغْنيthat suffice عنin place of الغيثِthe rain مهْماwhenever
أخْلَفَfails to visit الغيثُthe rain معْهدَthe familiar abode الأحْبابِof loved ones
I have tears that stand in for the rain, whenever
The rain fails to visit the abode of those I love.
وأناand I الآنnow فيin نَعيمٍbliss مُقيمٍabiding
بعْدَafter نُصْبٍhardship قدhad مسّنيtouched me وعَذابِand torment
And now I am in abiding bliss,
After hardship and torment had touched me.
هوَhe شمْسيmy sun وطالَماand so often قدhas توارَتْhidden itself
عنfrom جفونيmy eyelids يومَon the day of النَوىseparation بالحِجابِbehind the veil
He is my sun, and so often it has hidden
From my eyes on the day of parting, behind the veil.
غرَّنيhe deceived me منof وصالِهunion with him بخيالٍwith a phantom
كَغُرورِlike the deception of الصّاديthe thirsty one بلمْعِby the gleam of سَرابِa mirage
He deceived me with a phantom of union with him,
As a thirsty man is deceived by a mirage's gleam.
جنّةٌa paradise فيin عِذارِهِhis cheek's down ليَfor me فيهاwithin it
إنْif أبيحَتْit is granted طوبَىblessedness وحُسْنُand the goodness of مآبِa place of return
A paradise lies in his cheek's down; within it I have—
If it is granted—blessedness and a fair place of return.
فإذاand whenever ماemphatic particle العَذولُthe reproacher رامَseeks سُلُوِّيmy forgetting the beloved

And whenever the reproacher seeks to make me forget,
My hearing turns away from counsel.
ياO هِلالَcrescent of الجَمالِbeauty ياO ابْنَson of هِلالٍHilal
ياO هِلالاًcrescent يُزْريputs to shame بأُسْدِthe lions of الغابِthe forest
O crescent of beauty, O son of Hilal,
O crescent who puts the forest's lions to shame!
عُذّبَwas tormented القلْبُthe heart إذwhen نأيْتَyou departed وأضْحىand became
ذاpossessing نَعيمٍbliss إذwhen أبْتَyou returned خيرَthe finest إيابِhomecoming
The heart was tormented when you departed, and became
Full of bliss when you returned—the finest homecoming.
كمhow many سقتْنيgave me drink كُؤوسُthe cups of لحْظِكَyour glance حتّىuntil
مِلْتُI swayed وجْداًwith passion ميْلَlike the swaying of الغُصونِthe branches الرّطابِsupple
How often the cups of your glance gave me drink, until
I swayed with passion, as supple branches sway.
دُمْتَmay you endure ماas long as لاحَتِshone forth الكَواكِبُthe stars أوor ماas long as
ضحِكَlaughed الرّوضُthe garden منْfrom بكاءِthe weeping of السّحابِthe clouds
May you endure as long as the stars shine, or as long as
The garden smiles at the clouds' weeping.
