You will never be able to overturn God's decree.

So seek patience's aid, or else clothe yourself in sin.

And flee to the shelter of submission, and accept what

the Guardian has decreed, unwelcome or welcome.

Fortitude, when a calamity overpowers it,

grows meek in temper and submits, led alongside.

But if you couple resolve with it, resolve strengthens it,

until sorrow becomes vanquished before it.

So strike sorrow with consolations; their impact quenches

embers kindled among the ribs of the chest.

Whoever keeps company with time never lacks a thunderous calamity

that leaves him stricken throughout his life.

True calamity is not wealth shaken

by misfortune's hands, scattered and pruned away,

nor the dispersal of dear companions, carried away

by separation that leaves the cord of union severed,

but the loss of one whose death has left

the light of guidance and the splendor of knowledge stripped away.

Abu Ja'far perished, and knowledge with him; the two went together.

How great a companion was this, with that as his fellow!

Death did not destroy in him merely a man,

but destroyed a banner raised for the faith.

When death seized his life-blood, it gave the earth

a star hurled down upon whoever opposes the truth.

    فَالآنَ أَصبَحَ بِالتَكديرِ مَقطوبا

    Through him, time's drinking-places ran clear;

but now it has grown grim, its waters muddied.

No indeed! By his radiant days, which made

a light for knowledge and prayer-niches for piety,

time will never unveil an equal to him,

so long as pilgrimage halts riders at the markers:

more faithful to a pledge, and readier, when wrong is done, to kindle

a fire-stick, firmer in resolve and discipline

than he, and steadier in forbearance before an upheaval

that leaves even the nimble-minded unnerved.

When he unsheathed judgment to clarify a difficulty,

he made its obliterated path clear again.

His forbearance never deserts him in rebuke or irritation,

nor does he make the erring swallow reproach.

Idle talk and foul speech never enter his ear,

nor does he commit what would bring censure upon him.

    أَو آثَرَ الصَمتَ أَولى النَفسَ تَهييبا

    If he speaks, his words lead truth by its reins;

or, if he chooses silence, he fills the soul with awe.

His heart has two eyes of piety, through which he rose,

so he awakened thought through encouragement and warning.

His admonitions scour the rust from hearts, just as

the light of dawn's radiance dispels deep darkness.

His visible outer self and his inner self are alike,

so, despite shortcomings, you never find him blameworthy.

His eulogist is never safe from inadequacy and falling short,

nor fears being called a liar for praising at length.

The tracts of God's lands wished they could be made

his grave, so his body might bestow fragrance upon them.

Your life was, for the world and its inhabitants,

a light; now that light is veiled from it.

Had the earth known what it buried, it would surely have bowed—

all its regions—to you, in reverence and welcome.

You were the one who set right crookedness and lameness

in those who came to you, through counsel, guidance, and discipline.

And you gathered within yourself pure virtues,

thoroughly refined, free of contact with ignorance.

So if a pursuer from fate reaches you,

weakness did not turn it from what was hard to attain.

For death has a bitter, dreadful draught

that must be drunk, however loathed.

If they lament you, their thrones have indeed been toppled,

and knowledge has become the object of elegy and lament.

And among the marvels time has brought—

and time does indeed show us marvels—

is that the earth's hidden recesses have enfolded you in a hillside hollow,

though you once filled its plains and black-rock tracts.
