شابَ ماءَ الجُفونِ بِالدَمِ شَوقٌ
مَلَأَfilled القَلبَthe heart مِنهُfrom it فَهوَso it يَجيشُseethes
مَلَأَ القَلبَ مِنهُ فَهوَ يَجيشُ
Longing mingled the tears of the eyelids with blood;
it filled the heart, and the heart seethes with it.
شَفَّهُwasted him away الهَمُّgrief فَهوَso he is نِضوٌwasted سَقيمٌsick
شَفَّهُ الهَمُّ فَهوَ نِضوٌ سَقيمٌ
أَيُّwhat نَفسٍsoul مَعَwith الهُمومِthe sorrows تَعيشُlives
أَيُّ نَفسٍ مَعَ الهُمومِ تَعيشُ
Grief has wasted him away; he is gaunt and sick.
What soul can live amid these sorrows?
شَقِيَتsuffered بِالسُهادِfrom sleeplessness مُقلَةُeye حبٍّa lover
شَقِيَت بِالسُهادِ مُقلَةُ حبٍّ
باتَspent the night وَالجَمرُwhile the embers تَحتَهُbeneath him مَفروشُspread out
باتَ وَالجَمرُ تَحتَهُ مَفروشُ
A lover's eye suffered from sleeplessness;
he spent the night with embers spread beneath him.
شامَwatched بَرقاًa lightning flash يَحدوurges onward الرَدىdeath فَحَداهُthen urged him on
شامَ بَرقاً يَحدو الرَدى فَحَداهُ
لِوُرودِto reach الحِمامِdeath حادٍa camel-driver كَميشُswift
لِوُرودِ الحِمامِ حادٍ كَميشُ
He watched a lightning flash urging death onward; then he was driven
to meet death by a swift camel-driver.
