It is fitting that my eye's tears should fall,
It is right for my eyes to aim their tears,
And the young she-camels had sped away with those departing.
Though the slanderers have bared their fangs.
صَرَفتُI turned إِلَيهِمtoward them طَرفَgaze عَينٍan eye سَخينَةٍhot with grief
وَإِنسانُهاand its pupil فيin لُجَّةِdeep waters الدَمعِthe tears غائِصُsinking
I turned toward them the gaze of an eye hot with grief,
I turned towards them an eye hot with pain,
And its pupil was sinking in a deep sea of tears,
While its humanity was sunk in the sea of tears.
صَباحاًin the morning وَقَدand already طالَتstretched far دُوَينَjust this side of شُخوصِهِمtheir figures
فِساحُbroad expanses الفَيافيthe deserts وَالأَكامُand the hills الشَواخِصُtowering
In the morning, when between me and their figures stretched far
In the morning, when their departure dragged on-
The broad desert wastes and the towering hills.
The open spaces of al-Fayyaf, and the lofty sand dunes.

It has captivated you—but let it not master you, now that there has appeared
O Sabaak! Do not let it get the better of you, now that
A gleam of gray hair, flashing at the hair's partings.
The gleam of gray hair has appeared, illuminating the parting.
