تَمَنَّيتُI wished for المَنِيَّةَdeath يَومَthe day قالواthey said
غَداًtomorrow مَجموعُunited شَملِكُمُyour company شَتيتُscattered
I wished for death the day they said,
I wished for death the day they said
"Tomorrow your united company will be scattered."
tomorrow your scattered group will reunite
تَعيشُlives صَبابَتيmy longing وَيَموتُand dies صَبريmy patience
وَنَفسيand my soul لاnot تَعيشُlives وَلاand not تَموتُdies
My longing lives, and my patience dies,
My youth lives on while my patience dies
and my soul neither lives nor dies.
My soul neither lives nor dies
تَراءappeared لِيَto me الأسىsorrow فَصَدَفتُso I turned away عَنهُfrom it
فَقالَso it said إِلَيكَaway with you! إِنَّكَindeed you لاnot تَفوتُescape
Sorrow appeared to me, and I turned away from it;
Sorrow seemed easy so I dismissed it
so it said, "Go, then—you cannot escape."
Yet it said you won't escape me
تَكَلَّمَspoke ماءُwater (tears) عَينيmy eye عَنon behalf of فُؤاديmy heart
وَقَلبيand my heart مِنpart of سَجِيَّتِهِits nature السُكوتُsilence
The tears of my eye spoke for my heart,
My eyes' tears spoke of my heart's pain
and silence is in my heart's nature.
While my heart was rendered mute by grief
