لِلشَمسِ عِندَ طُلوعِها لَم تشرقِ
A radiant beauty—were the curtained chambers to reveal her radiance
To the sun at its rising, the sun would not shine.

قَمَرٌ تَأَلَّقَ تَحتَ لَيلٍ مُطبِقِ
A bough swaying upon a sandhill; above it
A moon gleaming beneath an all-enveloping night.
لَوif قيلَit was said لِلحُسنِto Beauty اِحتَكِمchoose freely لَمnot يَعدُهاgo beyond her

أَوor قيلَit was said خاطِبaddress غَيرَهاsomeone other than her لَمnot يَنطُقِspeak
أَو قيلَ خاطِب غَيرَها لَم يَنطُقِ
If Beauty were told, 'Choose,' it would not look beyond her;
Or told, 'Address someone other than her,' it would not speak.

وَكَأَنَّنا مِن وَجهِها في مَشرِقِ
And because of her tresses, we seem to be in the west;
And because of her face, we seem to be in the east.

She appears, and her radiance flits toward the eyes;
Woe befalls an eye that is not shut.
