By your life, I remain a companion of lovesickness.
By your life, I still swear affliction,
Nor has my heart found diversion since you left.
And without you, joy is denied my heart,

And on the way to visit you, the hardy she-camels,
Except by your tomb, for the wanderers,
When put to work, move at a gentle trot and a brisk pace.
When a companion tires, and lays down his song.

And among what deepens my anguish for you
And what increases longing with you,
Is the zeal of reproaching women—though reproach is idle talk.
Is the yearning of maidens, and tender love.

I shielded you with my own life from death's blows,
I have endured with myself the turns of fortune,
And all my days are reversals and rebuffs.
And all my life is but turns, and news.
