دامَت لَهُم نُعمى وَعَيشٌ رافِغُ
They have gone, so my life is troubled since their departure.
They left, so my life after them is full of sorrows,
May bliss and a life of plenty endure for them.
While they enjoy blessings and abundant livelihood.
غودِرتُI was left behind بَعدَهُمafter them أَسيرَa captive of صَبابَةٍardent longing
غودِرتُ بَعدَهُم أَسيرَ صَبابَةٍ

كَمَداً يُغَصِّصُني الشَرابُ السائِغُ
After their departure, I was left a captive of longing.
After them, I became a prisoner of youthfulness,
In grief, even palatable drink makes me choke.
Squeezing me like the smooth intoxicating wine.

لَكِن لَها قَلبٌ وَعَيشِكَ فارِغُ
She sang, and her singing kept me preoccupied;
She sang, so her singing kept me occupied,
Yet her heart—by your life—is free of care.
But she has a heart while your life is empty.

A lowland dove, she mounts the boughs, as though
She is a maiden high up on the branches as if
a goldsmith had bestowed on her that fashioned collar.
The one who crafted the necklace had gifted it to her.
