أَغناهُ جِنسُ عِلمِهِ عَن جِنسِهِ
The learned, wise man is his own son.
The wise scholar is self-reliant
His stock of learning frees him from reliance on his family stock.
His knowledge has made him independent of his lineage
كُنbe اِبنَthe son of مَنwhomever شِئتَyou wish وَكُنand be مُؤَدَّباًcultivated; well-mannered

فَإِنَّما المَرءُ بِفَضلِ كَيسِهِ
Be the son of whomever you wish, and be cultivated,
Be whoever's son you want, just be well-mannered
for a man's worth lies only in the excellence of his discernment.
For a man is only valued for his own merit
وَلَيسَand is not مَنone whom تُكرِمُهُyou honor him لِغَيرِهِfor another's sake
وَلَيسَ مَن تُكرِمُهُ لِغَيرِهِ
مِثلَlike الَّذيthe one whom تُكرِمُهُyou honor him لِنَفسِهِfor his own sake
مِثلَ الَّذي تُكرِمُهُ لِنَفسِهِ
And one whom you honor for another's sake is not
And he who is honored for another's sake
like one whom you honor for his own sake.
Is not like one honored for his own sake
