لَيسَis not المُقَصِّرُthe one who falls short وانِياًindolently كَالمُقصرِlike the one who holds back
حُكمُthe judgment المُعَذَّرِthe excuse-maker غَيرُdifferent from حُكمِthe judgment المُعذرِthe one with a valid excuse
One who falls short through indolence is not like one who holds back.
The hesitant is not like the negligent.
The judgment of an excuse-maker differs from that of one with a valid excuse.
The judgment of the excused is not the judgment of the excuser.
لَوif كُنتُI was أَعلَمُI know أَنَّthat لَحظَكِyour glance موبِقيmy undoing
I would have been wary مِنof عَينَيكِyour eyes ماwhat لَمdid not أَحذَرِI fear
Had I known that your glance would be my ruin,
Had I known your glance was my demise,
I would have guarded against what I had not feared in your eyes.
I would have guarded against your eyes, which I did not guard.
لاdo not تَحسَبيthink دَمعيmy tears تَحَدَّرَstreamed down إِنَّماrather, it is only
نَفسيmy soul جَرَتflowed فيin دَمعِيَmy tears المُتَحَدِّرِflowing down
Do not think it was my tears that streamed down; rather,
Do not suppose my tears cascaded, rather
My soul flowed within my streaming tears.
My soul flowed in my descending tears.
خَبَريmy story خُذيهِtake it عَنfrom الضَنىwasting sickness وَعَنِand from البُكاweeping
لَيسَis not اللِسانُthe tongue وَإِنeven if تَلِفتُI perish بِمُخبِرِa teller
Take my story from wasting sickness and from weeping;
Take my news from grief and from weeping,
My tongue will not tell, even if I perish.
The tongue is not eloquent, though it twists with an informer.
وَلَقَدand indeed نَظَرتُI looked فَرَدَّthen turned back طَرفيmy gaze خاسِئاًhumbled
حَذَرُfear العِدىthe enemies وَبَهاءُand the splendor ذاكَthat المَنظَرِsight
And indeed I looked; then my gaze was driven back, humbled,
And I did look, so he averted his glance disdainfully -
By fear of enemies and the splendor of that sight.
Fearing harm, and the radiance of that sight.
يَأسيmy despair يُحَسِّنُmakes seem good ليto me التَسَتُّرَconcealment فَاِعلَميso know
لَوif كُنتُI was أَطمَعُI hope فيكِin you لَمdid not أَتَسَتَّرِI conceal myself
My despair makes concealment seem good to me; know this:
My despair makes concealment good for me, so know,
If I had any hope of you, I would not hide.
If I hoped in you, I would not have concealed.
