أَمِنis it from نَحوِthe direction of العَقيقِal-ʿAqīq شَجاكsaddened you بَرقٌlightning
كَأَنَّas though وَميضَهُits flashing رَجعُthe blinking of الجُفونِthe eyelids
Has lightning from the direction of al-ʿAqīq stirred your sorrow?
Did lightning from Carnelian strike you as it flashed,
As though its flashing were the blinking of eyelids.
As if its glimmer were the return of eyelids?
أَياO بَرقَlightning of العَقيقِal-ʿAqīq أَقِمstay فَماfor there is no ليfor me
سِواكَother than you عَلىin الصَبابَةِardent longing مِنany مُعينِhelper
O lightning of al-ʿAqīq, stay, for I have no one
O lightning of Carnelian, stay! For I have none
But you to aid me in my longing.
But you to help me in my ardour.
أَحِنُّI yearn إِلىfor العَقيقِal-ʿAqīq وَساكِنيهِand its inhabitants
وَماand not يَخلوis free المُتَيَّمُone enslaved by love مِنof حَنينِyearning
I yearn for al-ʿAqīq and its inhabitants,
I yearn for Carnelian and its dwellers,
And one enslaved by love is never without yearning.
Nor can the lover be devoid of longing.
