He summoned the tear of agonizing longing with a call,
He called the tears of passionate longing with an invitation,
and it came, neither turning aside nor hesitating.
So they came, neither wavering nor hesitating.

Tears—they are pure, sweet water, and beneath it
Tears are the pure water, and beneath them
passion has flared up, its embers blazing.
A blazing passion rumbles and ignites.

لِقاؤُكَ وَالعُذّالُ عَنِّيَ رُقَّدُ
The cure for a heart whose greatest affliction you are
You are the greatest cure for a heart whose malady you are,
is meeting you while the reproachers sleep, away from me.
To meet you while you abandon me is torture.
دَنَوتُI drew near فَكافىand he repaid بِالدُنُوِّfor drawing near تَباعُداًwithdrawal
دَنَوتُ فَكافى بِالدُنُوِّ تَباعُداً
فَحَتّىso until مَتىwhen أَدنوI draw near إِلَيهِto him وَيَبعدُand he draws away
فَحَتّى مَتى أَدنو إِلَيهِ وَيَبعدُ
I drew near, and he repaid my approach by drawing away.
You drew near, so nearness in itself was enough distance.
So how long will I draw near to him while he draws away?
So for how long will I draw near while you pull away?
