يعيرني الواشي بأن لست مدنفاً
كماjust as هوhe منfrom فرطexcess الصبابةardent longing مدنفwasted by love
كما هو من فرط الصبابة مدنف
The slanderer taunts me for not being wasted by love,
The gossip reproaches me for not being friendly
as he is wasted by excessive longing.
As he is, being overly familiar

So, O spiteful foe who has come in an adviser’s guise,
Yet he who reproaches came in the guise of an adviser
busy yourself with someone else; you are not one who understands.
Mind your own business, you know me not

أضن به مما تظن وأشغف
And do not reproach me over the one I love, for I
And do not blame me for those I love, for I
am more jealously protective of him than you suppose, and more enamored.
Care for them more than you think, and am passionately fond

أيدري بمن يلحي وفيمن يعنف
Ask him—for I do not speak to a slanderer—
Ask him, for I do not speak with gossips
does he know whom he reproaches, and on whose account he is so harsh?
Who knows who flatters and who is harsh
