لئنif indeed رقدhe slept الواشيthe tale-bearer سروراًin delight بماat what رأىhe saw
وهانand it mattered little عليهto him أنthat يقرhe should rest وأنصباand I grow weary
If indeed the tale-bearer slept, pleased with what he saw,
Though the watchman slept content with what he saw,
And cared little that he rested while I grew weary,
And it was easy for him to rest and slumber,
لقدindeed أسهرhe kept awake العينيينthe two eyes منيof mine صبابةًwith longing
وغادرand he left قلبيmy heart مستهاماًlove-stricken معذباtormented
He has indeed kept my two eyes awake with longing,
My eyes were kept awake all night by love's unease,
And left my heart love-stricken and tormented.
And my heart was left torn and troubled.
عدمتmay I be deprived of الهوىlove أنif كنتI had عاشرتkept company with وافياًa faithful one
سواكother than you وقدand indeed طوفتI roamed شرقاًeastward ومغرباand westward
May I be deprived of love if I have ever kept company with anyone faithful
I thought my love for you was true and faithful,
Other than you, though I have roamed east and west.
None could rival you, east or west.
فإنso if لمnot تدعyou give up ماwhat لاnot أحبI like تظرفاًout of refinement
ولاnor راعياًhonoring عهديmy covenant فدعهthen give it up تحوباto avoid sin
So if you will not give up what I dislike out of refinement,
But if you fail to heed my wish and will,
Nor out of regard for my covenant, then give it up to avoid sin.
Or keep your vow to me, then leave me to my ruin.
