Did a flash of lightning gleaming in the night's darkness frighten you?

Yes—everything a longing lover encounters is [frightening].

Do you fear lightning now, while your beloved is present?

What, then, if it flashes while your beloved is far away?

And winds arose, deepening the longing lover's desire,

and the cooing doves visited the groves at dawn.

And you kept company with people, but did not find among them

your intimate friend; so your tears refused to flow.

And you no longer recite poetry since the departure of

your beloved, though poetry remains plentiful for others,

except, regretfully, the words of Ghaylan ibn ʿUqbah:

"Will the times that have passed return?"

Then you wish that your eye had never existed,

and that you had not departed while your beloved stayed.

For everything you meet grieves you by drawing near,

and everything you meet is heartbreaking when it departs.

So, alas for you! Do not hasten toward separation, for it

is death itself; so ward off the aftermath of what you do.
