فأصبرso I might be patient أمor مثليone like me ينهنههrestrains him الزجرrebuke
Can patience withstand the like of what I endure,
So that I might be patient—or can rebuke restrain one like me?
لئنif indeed كنتI have been غراًignorant بالذيof what قدalready لقيتهI encountered it
لفيsurely in فقدthe loss of تمييزيmy discernment يحقis due ليto me الأجرrecompense
If I have been ignorant of what I have endured,
Surely recompense is due to me for the loss of my discernment.
تقضتhave ended صباباتيmy ardent longings إليهfor him وقصرتand diminished
ظنونيmy expectations بهof him بلnay ليسthere is not ظنexpectation ولاnor ذكرremembrance
My longings for him are spent, and diminished
Are my expectations of him—nay, neither expectation nor remembrance remains.
وكفand ceased رجائيmy hope فاطمأنتso grew calm مخافتيmy fear
فلمso not يبقremains ليfor me إلاexcept التأسفsorrow والفكرand reflection
And my hope has ceased, so my fear has grown still.
So nothing remains for me but sorrow and reflection.
فماso no ليfor me رجاءٌhope غيرother than قربthe nearness of منيتيmy death
ولاand no خوفfear إلاexcept أنthat يطولbe prolonged بيfor me العمرlife
So I have no hope but the nearness of my death,
And no fear except that my life may be prolonged.

And had death's captivity not come between him
And me, I would not have cared what time had done.

If only death alone had relinquished him,
And separation, abandonment, and betrayal had vied with me for him.
