Rather, you are a cloud's firstborn, by lightning
that made it fertile—or a spear-shaft's, by a branch-cutter.
قَبِلَتكَreceived you at birth أَيْدِيhands of هِمَّةٍhigh ambition وَسِيادَةٍand lordship
وَرَضَعْتَand you suckled دَرَّthe flowing milk of مكارِمٍnoble deeds وَمَواهِبِand gifts
Hands of high ambition and lordship received you at birth,
and you suckled the flowing milk of noble deeds and gifts,
فيin عزِّthe glory of مَهدٍa cradle مَاnot استَقَرَّwas settled مكانُهُits place
إِلّاexcept بقربِnear مَنابرٍpulpits وَمَحارِبِand battlefields
in the glory of a cradle whose place was settled
only near pulpits and battlefields.
وَفُطِمْتَand you were weaned يوْمَthe day فُطِمتَyou were weaned فِيamid رَهَجِthe dust of الوَغىbattle
عندat التفافِthe entangling of كتائبٍbattalions بكتائبِwith battalions
And you were weaned, the day you were weaned, amid battle-dust,
where battalions tangled with battalions.
حَتَّىuntil حَلَلْتَyou occupied منin السماءِthe sky مراتِباًstations
تركَتleft كَواكِبَهاits stars بغيرِwithout مَراتِبِstations
Until you occupied stations in the sky
that left its stars without stations.
فلَئِنْso even if طَلبتَyou seek هُناكَthere حقّاًa right صاعداًascending
فلأَنْتَthen you indeed أَقرَبُnearer منthan وريدِthe jugular vein of الطَّالِبِthe seeker
So though you seek a right there, ascending,
you are indeed nearer than the seeker's jugular vein.
وَلئنand if وَهَبتَyou gave لقدindeed وَهبتَyou gave مساعياًnoble achievements
أَصبحْنَthey became حَلْيَthe adornment of مآثريmy proud deeds وَمَناقِبيand my virtues
And if you gave, you indeed gave noble achievements
that became adornments for my proud deeds and virtues:
شيَماًqualities بِهَاwith them حَلَّيْتُI adorned غُرَّthe bright brows of قصائِديmy odes
وجَعلْتُهُنَّand I made them أَهِلَّةًcrescent moons لِكواكِبيfor my stars
qualities with which I adorned the bright brows of my odes,
and made them crescent moons for my stars.
وَذَخَرْتُand I stored للأَزْمانِfor the ages منfrom حَسناتِهَاtheir beauties
مثْلَlike القلائدِnecklaces فِيon نحورِthe necks of كواعبِmaidens with budding breasts
And I stored for the ages some of their beauties,
like necklaces on the necks of maidens with budding breasts.
ولأَشفِيَنَّand I shall surely cure بِهَاwith them سَقامَthe sickness of تَغَرُّبِيmy exile
ولآسُوَنَّand I shall surely heal بِهَاwith them جراحَthe wounds of مَصائبيmy calamities
And I shall surely cure with them the sickness of my exile,
and surely heal with them the wounds of my calamities.
ولأَجْعَلَنْand I shall surely make منهاfrom them تمائِمَamulets for خائفٍone afraid
منof طائِفٍa haunting spirit أَوْor مِنْof رجاءٍhope خائبِdisappointed
And I shall surely make from them amulets for one afraid
of a haunting spirit, or of a disappointed hope.
ولأَتْرُكَنَّand I shall surely leave ثناءهاtheir praise وجزاءهاand their recompense
قوتَfood for المُقيمِthe stay-at-home غداًtomorrow وزادَand provisions for الرَّاكبِthe rider
And I shall surely leave their praise and their recompense
as tomorrow's food for the stay-at-home and provisions for the rider,
وسرورَand joy for محزونٍone sorrowful وأُنْسَand solace for مُغَرَّبٍan exile
وحُليَّand adornments for أَوْتارٍstrings وروضَةَand a garden for شاربِa drinker
and a sorrower's joy, and an exile's solace,
and the adornment of strings, and a drinker's garden.
ولقدand indeed نَثَرْتُI scattered عَلَيْكَupon you شَكلَكَyour like جَوْهَراًas jewels
لاnot مَاwhat قمَشتُI scavenged وضمَّand bundled حبلُthe rope of الحاطبِthe wood-gatherer
And I have indeed scattered upon you gems to match you,
not scraps I scavenged and a wood-gatherer's rope bundled.
