Time's vicissitudes have left my fortunes threadbare.

What does my fate want with me, I wonder,

that I seem to be its enemy,

and it pelts me with its arrows?

Where is my time that has passed away?

And where is my prestige, and where my wealth?

And where are my leather boots and my mantle?

And where is my chatter, and where my talk?

And where is my life, and where my recklessness?

And where are my beauty and my well-being?

And we were among noble young men,

whose glory ranked high among all glories.

And we were in a wondrous gathering,

    beyond description or compare.

It gathered within itself every kind of beauty,

and so attained the utmost perfection.

    والزَّمرُ تَلْتَلْ تَلَلْ تَلالي

    So the tambourine: daf, duf, duduf, duduf, duf;

    and the piping: tal-tal, talal, talali;

and the harp: tin-tin, tinin, ti-tin-tin.

The lady of the curtained chambers tuned it.

She sang, and my heart grew enraptured,

with longing for her lawful magic.

And abundant wine was among us,

studded with pearls by the mixing.

A delicate young gazelle passed it round,

    slender of figure and well-proportioned.

Fresh in taste, it had been aged

a thousand years, then a thousand more, by the hand of nights.

    Rosy-cheeked and sweet—

none but he among people is lawful for me.

I said to him, when he kept deferring his promise to me

and persisted in excuses and delay:
