Lo, the best thing humankind strives to obtain
Behold, the best that one strives to attain in life
Is a book from the All-Merciful, inscribed with light.
Is a book from the Merciful illuminated with light

يجلُّis too exalted ويغلوand too precious أَنْto يباعَbe sold وَيُشترىand be bought
A noble book, clear in script and sufficient,
A noble book, its script healing and sufficient
Too exalted and precious to be sold and bought.
Too sublime and lofty to be sold or bought
ولقَيتهand I found it الحصنَthe fortress الحصينَimpregnable وإنّهand indeed it
لَحُصْنٌsurely a fortress بآيِwith the verses اللهِof God باتَspent the night منّوراًilluminated
And I found it an impregnable fortress; indeed, it
I met it, a strong and mighty fortress
Is surely a fortress, lit through the night by God's verses.
Fortified with God's verses, radiant and bright
غداbecame ليلةًone night فيهِwithin it التمائمُthe amulets جُنّةٌa shield
لِمَنْfor whoever كانَwas منصورَvictorious اللّواءِthe banner مُظفراtriumphant
One night, the amulets within it became a shield
In the night when talismans are like armed hosts
For one whose banner was victorious, himself triumphant.
Victorious is he who holds its banner of might
وَمنand among فَضلهِits virtues أَنَّthat العَدوَّthe enemy إذاwhen رأىsees
لحاملهfor its bearer أَمسىbecame بهِbecause of it متأخراretreating
And one of its virtues is that, when the enemy sees
When the enemy sees it with its bearer
It with its bearer, he retreats because of it.
They retreat, overpowered without a fight

عزيزاًmighty مهيباًawe-inspiring فيin العيونِthe eyes موقراhonored
Its bearer appears great in people's minds, revered,
Glorious it shines in souls, revered
Mighty and awe-inspiring in their eyes, honored.
Honored, cherished by eyes with delight
وكمand many a حاملِpregnant woman لمَّاwhen رأتهُshe saw it تَخلَصَتْshe was delivered
وأَحضرهاand hastened her الطّلقُlabor الذيwhich قدhad تعسراproved difficult
And many a pregnant woman, upon seeing it, was delivered,
How many bearers when seeing it were freed
And the labor that had proved difficult hastened her delivery.
As bonds dissolved, once stubborn and tight
وكمand many a أرمدِsore-eyed man بالسحرby sorcery قدalready كانَhad been أَكمهاblind
فَلماthen when أىsaw (likely رأى) ماwhat فيهwas in it فيat الحالthat instant أبصراhe gained sight
And many a sore-eyed man had been blinded by sorcery;
How many blind, its words made seeing
Then, when he saw what it contained, he gained sight at once.
As soon as they beheld its healing sight
وذاتand a woman with نزيفِa hemorrhage بالدِّماءِof blood راتshe saw بهthrough it
عَياناًwith her own eyes وَقَدwhile already قامتhad risen منof الدَّمِblood أَبحراseas
And a woman hemorrhaging blood saw, through it,
A bleeding woman, it stanched her flows
With her own eyes, while seas of blood had welled up.
And stopped her hemorrhaging, once a plight

And a widow, bereft of a husband, found
A widow, bereft of husband, it made
Her affairs with suitors made easy through it.
Her affairs with suitors easy and right
فياso, O! لكَto you حرزاًa protective charm أَحرزَsecured النّقعَthe dust كُلَهُall of it
وأَربىand surpassed علىover منwhoever حازَهُobtained it ملكُthe dominion قيصراof Caesar
So what a talisman you are, securing all the dust,
O what a protection, warding all evil
And surpassing Caesar's dominion for whoever obtained it.
More powerful than any emperor's might
