لقد كانَ حَدُّ السكر من قبل صَلْبه

لقد كانَ حَدُّ السكر من قبل صَلْبه

خفيفَ الأذى إذا كانَ في شَرْعنا جلدا

خفيفَ الأذى إذا كانَ في شَرْعنا جلدا

Indeed, before his crucifixion, the punishment for drunkenness was

Once there was a limit to punishment according to our laws,

mild in its harm, when under our law it was flogging.

When the punishment was light for drunkenness - only flogging.

فلمّا بَدا المصلوبُ قُلتُ لصاحبي

فلمّا بَدا المصلوبُ قُلتُ لصاحبي

ألا تُبْ فإنَّ الحدَّ قد جاوز الحدّا

ألا تُبْ فإنَّ الحدَّ قد جاوز الحدّا

Then, when the crucified man appeared, I said to my companion:

But when they crucified the innocent one, I said to my friend:

Take heed: repent, for the punishment has exceeded the limit.

"Let us leave, for punishment has gone beyond all bounds."
