If my parchment stands in for my lip in kissing,

and my soul for my sight in seeing you,

and a phantom from you visits me, reserved

for my soul in a dream—then what need have I of the senses?

And who will grant me the beautiful sight of you, through which

my eye can dispense with the sight of the full moon and the sun?

Yet I am comforted after my loneliness

by the company of Wali al-Dawla, the most bountiful priest,

and his son, the eminent sheikh, surely aids me

with whatever I desire of abundant gifts and companionship.

And I swear: in their view, neither the son nor the father has

life without a spirit that comes from the chief priest.
