رأيتُ سراجَ الدِّين للصّفْع صالحاً
ولكنّهُbut he فيin علْمهhis learning فاسدُunsound الذِّهنthe mind
ولكنّهُ في علْمه فاسدُ الذِّهن
I found Siraj al-Din fit for slapping,
I saw Siraj ad-Din apt for slapping
But in his learning he is unsound of mind.
Yet in his knowledge, corrupt in mind
استرهshield him بالكفِّwith the palm خوفَfor fear of انطفائهhis going out
استره بالكفِّ خوفَ انطفائه
وآفتُهand his bane منْfrom طَفْئهhis being extinguished كثرَةُan excess of الدُّهنoil
وآفتُه منْ طَفْئه كثرَةُ الدُّهن
Shield him with your palm, for fear he might go out;
Cover him with your palm, fearing his extinction
And the bane that snuffs him out is too much oil.
For his flaw is the excess oil quenching his flame
