Your letter arrived on an overcast, rainy day,

with the garden arrayed in silver dirhams and gold dinars.

I saw what surpassed the gardens in beauty,

and absorbed what frees a young man from needing an intoxicant.

And from the letter's folds and unfolding I inhaled

a fragrance wafting like ambergris to whoever breathes it.

Indeed, I remembered you in the haunts of my delight,

yearning for the beauty of that sight.

And I sent the freshly gathered rose a greeting,

sending it while its robe lay unbuttoned.

Then its breaths grew fragrant, and a blush suffused

its cheeks; it appeared with a crimson cheek.

The narcissus wept at your absence, never closing

its eyelids—and whoever loves you keeps vigil.

And the violet appeared blue, grieving for

the hours of your company, O gracious companion.

And the jasmine's bloodletting bandage came undone,

so it wept blood for a wayfarer in the camp.

And the stock flower wept, scattering its tears

in longing—but no, its longing was not scattered.

The citron's fingers count out a span

of estrangement in which its like was never forsaken.

And the kabbād citron too is heartsick; it has

come to wear a face yellow from parting with you.

And that tilapia has indeed been fried by

the sight of your beauty—and then the fresh mullet too.

And from the slender canes one emerged, charging with the

quivering spear, sipping; and the sugar-sweet cane swayed.

And the pomegranate was struck at its heart's kernel,

so flawless gems spilled from it—al-Jawharī's Ṣiḥāḥ.

And the short poems on the Nile have grown delicate, and

delightful; their river has become like Kawthar.

By God, I shall not forget you, O my solace, the one

to whom I reveal my backward glances and remembrance.
