وافى النَفيسُ لنا بخمرٍ حامِضٍ

وافى النَفيسُ لنا بخمرٍ حامِضٍ

كالخلِّ إلاَّ أنّهُ مادَوَّدا

كالخلِّ إلاَّ أنّهُ مادَوَّدا

Al-Nafis came to us with sour wine,

like vinegar, except that it had bred no worms.

وأتى يُحَلّيهِ لنا بِقُطارَةٍ

وأتى يُحَلّيهِ لنا بِقُطارَةٍ

لِنُسيغَه فَصَحوتُ فيهَ معربِدا

لِنُسيغَه فَصَحوتُ فيهَ معربِدا

And he came to sweeten it for us with syrup,

so we could swallow it; I grew sober on it, yet ranted like a drunk.

وَجَلاهُ والذُّبّانُ في كاساتهِ

وَجَلاهُ والذُّبّانُ في كاساتهِ

عُقَداُ فشاهَدْنا حبُاباً أسودا

عُقَداُ فشاهَدْنا حبُاباً أسودا

He unveiled it, while the flies in its cups

formed knots—so we saw black bubbles.

يا أيُّها الخِلُّ الودودُ بَعثْتَ لي

يا أيُّها الخِلُّ الودودُ بَعثْتَ لي

خَلاً ودودُ التّيْسِ يهدي للهُدى

خَلاً ودودُ التّيْسِ يهدي للهُدى

O loving friend, you sent me

vinegar—and the he-goat’s worms lead to guidance.
