I played chess with an enchanter of

glances, dark-lipped and slender of form.

And my game in it was a snare laid

for him, to gain the end I sought.

I wagered with him for a kiss that would heal

my heart of the anguish of burning desire.

Until, when between us there clashed

two armies, one Roman and one Indian,

I gave him myself, and gave him

a knight of mine, with which I had been a soldier.

And I rose like a madman at my winnings,

kissing the beauty spots upon his cheek.

And I became like an elephant with its trunk

    toying with basil and roses.

I advanced like a rook toward a goal,

and moved like the vizier in my rapture.

Then we embraced and made our peace; already

the pawn of his breast had become a vizier.

And my wish was that afterward I might

untie the two knots of that waistband.

Nor was my game any hindrance in this,

for I am lofty among the beardless youths.

And Iblis said to me, “Take one!”

And sound counsel is what the Najdi said.

God, how moon-bright is his face,

    perfect as the auspicious moon!

So tell me: if you spurn and cut off one

you wrong, and then seek redress against him,

do you not see my eyes inflamed

for you, from tears and honey?

So do not cut me off; unite with me, O

gazelle of a sand dune, who slays lions.
