Yes, her cheeks have put the garden roses to shame.
And her breasts have outshone the pomegranates on the boughs.

She is the gazelle—no, gazelles have not her figure.
She is the full moon—no, full moons have not her necklaces.

And the full moon takes from her her face and her station,
and the gazelle, her two eyes and her neck.

snares of dreams, that perhaps I may catch her.

when its slumber has grown familiar with the phantom of fancy?

To God I complain of the heart of one who does not want me,
as my fortune dictates, though my heart desires her.

No fault is mine except the veiling of a burning anguish,
which patience would not let appear, yet my tears bring back.

though my wish is to visit her every day.

A veiled woman: her coquetry wrongs the lovesick lover,
but not as her turning away wrongs him.

Her eye wounds the heart more deeply than gleaming swords;
when she unsheathes it, hearts are its scabbards.

their capture reminded me of hunting gazelles,
by Turkish champions whose lions none dare assail.
