لهhe has صورةٌa face يَسْتَحِنُyearns القردُthe monkey عندهاin its presence
له صورةٌ يَسْتَحِنُ القردُ عندها
علىdespite أَنَّthe fact that وجهَthe face القردِof the monkey أَحسنُmore beautiful منظراin appearance
على أَنَّ وجهَ القردِ أَحسنُ منظرا
He has a face that makes a monkey yearn,
He has a face before which monkeys humble themselves,
though the monkey’s face is fairer to behold.
As if the monkey's face were the more comely sight.
إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle ابتدانيhe began addressing me بالحديثِwith speech حَسِبْتُهُI thought him
إذا ما ابتداني بالحديثِ حَسِبْتُهُ
تَسَوَّكَhe cleaned his teeth with a tooth-stick منfrom فَرطِthe excess النتّونةِof stench
تَسَوَّكَ من فَرطِ النتّونةِ
Whenever he began speaking to me, I thought he
When he begins to speak to me, I fancy
had brushed his teeth—so overpowering was the stench.
He is chewing betel from excess of daintiness.
