A lovesick man—were you to make him happy,

he would not lie awake through a night you sleep away.

    فالطّرفُ لِذاكَ مُسَهّدهُ

    Estrangement has wasted him away with grief;

and so his eyes keep him sleepless.

How often he has sung through a night that dragged on for him:

“O night of the lovesick lover, when will his morrow come?”

Reproach spurs him on, so his reproacher

does not set him right, but ruins him.

My lord, how often your lover draws near

to you in love, while you drive him away.

And why do his tears reveal

his passion for you, while you deny it?

Far be it from you—he has no refuge—

ever to drive him from your door.

    Never suppose that his reproacher

can prove him wrong by censuring his love for you.
