أحذَرْ نَديميَ أنْ تذوقَ المسكرا

أحذَرْ نَديميَ أنْ تذوقَ المسكرا

أو أنْ تُحاوِلَ قطّ أمراً مُنكرا

أو أنْ تُحاوِلَ قطّ أمراً مُنكرا

Beware, my boon companion, of tasting intoxicating drink,

My friend, beware drinking wine’s danger,

or ever attempting a reprehensible deed.

Or trying anything immoral or strange.

لا تَشَربِ الصّهباءَ صرفاً قرقفا

لا تَشَربِ الصّهباءَ صرفاً قرقفا

وتزورَ مَن تَهواهُ إلا في الكرى

وتزورَ مَن تَهواهُ إلا في الكرى

Do not drink tawny wine, undiluted and shiver-inducing,

Don’t drink pure wine in long draughts,

nor visit the one you love except in sleep.

Or visit those you desire, except in disguise.

أنا ناصحٌ لَكَ إنْ قَبلتَ نَصيحتي

أنا ناصحٌ لَكَ إنْ قَبلتَ نَصيحتي

إشربْ متى ما رُمتَ سُكراً سكّرا

إشربْ متى ما رُمتَ سُكراً سكّرا

I am your adviser, if you accept my advice:

I advise you, if you’ll accept my advice:

Drink sugar whenever you seek intoxication.

Drink if you wish intoxicating sweetness,

والرأيُ عِندي تَرْكُ عَقْلكَ سالماً

والرأيُ عِندي تَرْكُ عَقْلكَ سالماً

من أنْ تراهُ بالمدام تَغيّرا

من أنْ تراهُ بالمدام تَغيّرا

And my counsel is to keep your mind intact,

But my view is to leave your mind intact,

rather than see it altered by wine.

Rather than see it changed by wine.

ذي دولةً المنصور لاجين الذي
