O you whose favors pour down,

if rain and autumn showers grow stingy,

An autumn shower of bounty—people have seen

his like in autumn rain’s place.

    And O king of creation,

and son of the king [epithet unclear],

O Ṣāliḥ, righteous among all mankind,

    among all Arabs and non-Arabs,

And you whose face has a radiance

like the full moon on its fullest night,

O rain, O lion, in both states—

    battle and peace.

    فاصفَحْ وَخُذْه بحُلْم

    Your servant offers words of congratulation;

so pardon him and treat him with forbearance.

    And hear an amusing tale,

and marvel at my meager portion.

The Feast of Sacrifices has arrived,

pushing its way into the throng.

    I have muzzled my dogs,

and in my house, mice pass for meat.

So I said, when they pressed me—

    my family—for meat and fat:

“Get up and eat me, for I am

a piece of meat here in the house.”

My daughter says to my sister,

and my uncle’s daughter to my mother:

“Has the physician, I wonder, forbidden us

meat and fat, to ward off illness?

Or is that man fasting without a break?

Or is he severing the bonds of kinship?

Or does poetry fetch no price,

and the customary gift lie waste, like a deserted ruin?”

And if a dog could be offered in sacrifice,

I would slaughter my uncle at the feast.

    So, O king of creation,

and O remedy for my bleeding wound,

Without you, my praise would be lost,

and my prose and verse would go unsold.

    So remain lavish in gifts,

with bounty pouring down from you.
